Best Coffee Spots in Cardiff

Just like any city centre, Cardiff offers a plethora of the usual chain coffee shops but aside from these, the walls of the city are littered with cosy, independent coffee roasters.

Here’s our selection of some of the stars of the coffee show - in no particular order – where you can spend hours with friends or grab a quick pick me up!

Big Moose

Owned by USW Alumni, Chloe, and her father, Big Moose’s ethos is to provide people with ‘a hand up not a handout.’

Established in honour of a family friend, Big Moose is working to help with mental health, prevention of suicide and prevention of homelessness, whilst simultaneously serving up awesome coffee, cakes and brunch dishes.

A non-profit coffee shop, Big Moose employs, trains and mentors’ people who’ve experienced homelessness and offer free counselling to all staff.

As well serving huge cups of delicious coffee, they also serve huge amounts of positivity and warmth to their guests.

The Little Man Coffee Company

Just a five-minute walk from our Cardiff Campus, this is the perfect place to get that much needed pre-lecture caffeine fix.

Based in a former post office, Little Man is home to one of Cardiff’s most comprehensive coffee collections, available to enjoy in store, or order a roasted coffee box with three types of Welsh coffee which will be delivered to your door.

With so many options and a great city centre location, it was only fair to include them on our list.

Coaltown Coffee Roasters

A new addition to Castle Arcade, Ammanford based Coaltown has taken the plunge and opened their first espresso bar away from their hometown.

Serving locally sourced cakes from Cardiff’s best bakeries, Coaltown sounds like a great place to spend a rainy afternoon.

It's going to be a three-month Christmas pop-up for the meantime, but the owner and founder is adamant that they will be making Cardiff their permanent home (and who can blame them?)

Hard Lines Coffee

With a cafe in Canton, an adorable espresso bar in Cardiff Market and a roastery just outside the centre of Cardiff, they sure have established themselves as city coffee icons.

Always more than just great coffee, Hard Lines is all about customer relationships, sustainability, and fun (check out their funky packaging)

Their café in Canton, inspired by the ‘diner' culture of west coast America crossed with the old school Italian valley cafes’, serves up epic breakfasts, lunch and sweet treats and paired with a cracking coffee and epic tunes, there’s not much more to ask for.

Kin + Ilk

Kin means family, Ilk is your kind.

They say that people are at the centre of their vision, so there’s no surprise that they have several cafés dotted around the ‘Diff.

Operating sustainably, with compostable Vegware cups for takeaway coffees you can enjoy a coffee without feeling guilty of forgetting your coffee cup.

With breakfast, brunch, lunch AND snack offerings, you will definitely be spoilt for choice here so don’t make any plans straight after visiting as you’ll probably need a nap after all of the delicious goodies!

Coffi Co Mermaid Quay

Coffee, Chandeliers and Cardiff Bay – what more could you ask for?

With panoramic views of the Bay, coffee by day and then craft beers by night, the Mermaid Quay branch of Coff Co is the ultimate hang-out space if you fancy a little luxury that isn’t going to cost the world or too far from campus.

Aside from Mermaid Quay, Coffi Co have several locations around Cardiff and South Wales. Each location offers a different vibe, so why not make it a weekly treat of visiting a different branch each time? Just imagine enjoying a Porthcawl sunset in the summer with an ice-cold cider or a cosy, student hangout in Cathays on a cold winter’s evening.
