Top 10 Best Bars & Pubs in Pontypridd

With big brands like JD Wetherspoons as well smaller independent bars, this valleys town has plenty for you to plan a good evening out.

Here are ten of our favourite bars and pubs in no particular order:

1. Rickards Arms

For a traditional British pub with a warm welcome, visit the Rickards Arms. Based on Park Street, this dog-friendly pub includes pool tables, darts, and pub quizzes as well as a nice beer garden. 

The Rickards Arms offers a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices along with delicious home-cooked pub food – from curry and chips to a roast dinner on a Sunday. Based in the heart of Pontypridd and not far from our Treforest campus, make sure you visit the Rickards while in town.

2. No 12

Fancy live music as you enjoy a cocktail? Head over to No 12 to enjoy cocktails and real ales with friends in a fun atmosphere. Based on Market Street, this quirky cocktail bar often hosts live music and open mic nights for its guests to enjoy. 

Dog friendly and with a good variety of drinks, No 12 serves drinks from local breweries in South Wales to help you enjoy what the area has to offer away from the big brands. This buzzing cocktail bar is often packed with customers enjoying live music along with their drinks.

3. Otley Brewpub & Kitchen

Looking for delicious craft ales and cocktails with a friendly atmosphere? Look no further than Pontypridd’s Otley Brewpub & Kitchen.  Rhondda Cynon Taff’s only brewpub, the Otley features Mabby Brew Co beers which are brewed in-house as well as tasty gastro and street food. 

A modern take on the traditional pub, the Otley is only a short walk from our Treforest campus and sells a mix of homebrewed and guest beers. There is also plenty of other drink options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, if you’re not a beer drinker. This third-generation family pub on Forest Road is a firm favourite among locals and should be on your list of places to visit in the Ponty area.

4. The Gatto Lounge

After something a bit different? Whether you’re looking for something boozy or non-alcoholic, Gatto Lounge has a wide variety of drinks to suit you and all of your friends in a bright and colourful setting. 

With a friendly welcome and eccentric decor Gatto lounge offers everything from milkshakes and smoothies to herbal teas and juices, all the way to extravagant cocktails, fine wines, and beer. This personality-packed venue at Llys Cadwyn on Taff Street is not to be missed when exploring Pontypridd’s waterholes.

5. The Tumble Inn - JD Wetherspoons

If you’re looking for something a bit more familiar, Pontypridd has its very own Wetherspoons. The Tumble Inn is a traditional-style pub, based on Broadway, that sits in the heart of the town offering a good variety of drinks from beer and cocktails to alcohol-free lager. 

As with all ‘Spoons, you can expect budget-friendly prices for your drinks as well as cheap and cheerful pub grub. Another great aspect of the Tumble Inn is that it’s opposite Pontyrpidd Train Station meaning it can be a great location for pre-drinks before heading to one of the cities.

6. The Llanover Arms

Another traditional pub that is popular among Pontypridd locals is the Llanover Arms. Serving a variety of drinks, including a selection of real ales, you can expect reasonable prices and a warm welcome at this pub which is based on Llanover Street. 

Bits of history from the Llanover Arms can be seen in the pub which has been serving customers in Pontypridd for more than 200 years. With live entertainment such as pub quizzes and music, the friendly and characterful pub also has an impressive beer garden to go with its traditional boozer aesthetic.

7. Bunch of Grapes

The Bunch of Grapes is a must-visit location if you’re a fan of real ales in a modern gastro-pub setting. This renowned pub is known for its warm welcome, delicious food and amazing selection of drinks. As well as a variety of cask and keg beers, gins, whiskies and wine, the Bunch of Grapes also offers an incredible range of alcohol-free beers if you want the real-ale experience without the booze. 

A community pub with delicious Welsh produce on offer on the menu, you can always expect a warm welcome at this pub which prides itself on stocking drinks from independent breweries. Based on Ynysyngharad Road, the Bunch of Grapes is a friendly pub not to be missed.

8. Alfred's Bar & Grill

If you’re looking to have a drink in style, head to Alfred’s Bar & Grill to enjoy an evening in a modern brasserie style restaurant. With a good selection of drinks, including a variety of delicious cocktails, Alfred’s looks to mimic the ambience and atmosphere of a New York brasserie in Pontypridd. 

As you may have guessed from the name, Alfred’s also includes tasty food as it prides itself on fresh ingredients which have been cooked in house. As well as good food and drinks, you can also enjoy live sports and music at this Market Street venue

9. Mo's Bar

We of course wouldn’t be able to complete this list without our very own student union watering hole Mo’s Bar. Enjoy a variety of cheap alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as you relax with friends, play a game of pool, or grab a cheap bite to eat. 

Mo’s shows major sports games as well as hosting acoustic bands and singers to entertain customers with live music. Enjoy regular pub quizzes from the safety of USW Treforest’s SU. Plus, it’s next door to the SU’s other entertainment, such as the Eclipse nightclub, if you’re looking for an easy night out.

10. The Tipsy Owl

Finally, another Pontypridd-based cocktail bar which should be on your list of must-visit locations is the Tipsy Owl. This small but cool-feeling bar on Bridge Street offers a variety of fresh and delicious cocktails as well as a good selection of different gins. 

With entertainment such as quiz nights as well as themed cocktail evenings, you are guaranteed a fun and memorable night at The Tipsy Owl as you sip on colourful and Instagram-worthy drinks which look like they belong in a magazine with your friends.
