James Evans - Coleg y Cymoedd
We caught up with James Evans at our 2018 summer graduation ceremony who told us about his learning journey. James studied Foundation Degree Business Studies at our partner college Coleg y Cymoedd before progressing to the University of South Wales to complete his top-up BA (Hons) Business Studies.
"I left school straight after A-levels and started a modern apprenticeship as a Customer Service Engineer with my current employers, Openreach. I had been employed by the company for about 12 years as an Operations manager when I wanted to progress to further roles within the company. I had undertaken some short career-related courses, but felt a higher education course would be more suitable in the long term. After researching, I found the perfect course in my local college, Coleg y Cymoedd. I was able to study the Foundation degree Business Studies part-time.
This meant that I could fit studying around my fulltime job and family. The lecturers really appreciated my background, in that I hadn’t studied for a long time and that I had other commitments such as a job and family. They made a real effort to support me through my studies. After I completed the foundation degree, I progressed to the University of South Wales to study the top-up year for the BA (Hons) Business Studies. It’s been a long but worthwhile journey. I have now had the opportunity to progress to other roles at work, where I am currently on secondment as a Senior Operations manager. I would really recommend studying in this way as it offers a good balance to continue working, studying and having a family. You do have to be prepared to put in the effort to balance everything, but it is manageable."
