We pride ourselves on our breadth of civil engineering courses that are based on the demands of industry, so they give you the skills that employers look for, and our strong links with industry mean you’ll have many opportunities to engage with companies during your studies.
Our undergraduate courses give you the appropriate practical and academic training for a career in civil engineering, including structural design, geotechnical design, project management, highway and transport engineering, and sustainable design and development.
Our postgraduate courses help you to develop the critical and analytical skills, alongside management expertise, needed to establish or consolidate your career as a civil engineer.
The BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). See www.jbm.org.uk for further information. Our MEng meets the requirements for Chartered Engineer status in full, while BEng requires a period of further learning, for example, postgraduate study in civil engineering.
All our Civil Engineering courses offer you the chance to gain hands-on experience of many aspects of civil engineering, including surveying, structural testing, and materials selection. We value the importance of practical learning, so we give you as many opportunities as possible to help prepare you for the workplace. Meet the team that will be teaching you at USW.
Civil engineering facilities include new laboratories for structures, materials and geotechnics. These facilities allow us to demonstrate fundamental engineering principles and help students carry out project and research work. We test steel, concrete and masonry lintels, together with other structural materials, to improve product design and discover new methods of construction.

Our HNC in Civil Engineering is a vocational higher education qualification, equivalent to the first year of a university degree. The HNC Civil Engineering course focuses on equipping you with the practical and personal skills needed for the workplace.
Study fundamental engineering principles, underpinned by mathematics, health and safety, and sustainability and learn how to use industry-standard software for the design and construction of civil engineering projects.
The four-year Master of Engineering (MEng) Civil Engineering degree, the highest award for undergraduate study in engineering, is designed for more able students and fully satisfies the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Your engineering studies will develop the critical and analytical skills, and management expertise needed to manage civil engineering projects and implement sustainable solutions.
The MSc Professional Engineering, which meets the academic requirements of CEng status, is available to those currently in employment and is ideal if you are seeking to further progress and develop within the engineering profession.
We offer a number of postgraduate research programmes including Masters by Research and PhD, which allow you to make an in-depth study of a civil engineering topic that interests you. You can study full-time or part-time, on campus or by distance (subject permitting). If you are an engineering professional with an existing body of work, you may be eligible for the PhD by Portfolio.
Undertaking a work placement is a great chance for you to apply your current skills and gain new ones from a real-world setting, as well as putting you ahead of the competition when you graduate.
At USW we create graduates who are prepared for tomorrow. We offer learning that reflects employer demands, and equip our students with the skills and experience to succeed. We produce employment-ready graduates who are a step ahead of their competitors.
AMTeC is a modular multi-disciplinary engineering research centre nucleating from on-going research and consultancy work in Civil Engineering and addressing innovation challenges facing the infrastructure sector.
AMTeC has widened and enhanced its scope to include cutting-edge research into sustainable cementitious materials, geo-polymers and composite materials, such as fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs). It also looks at modern materials testing and analysis methods.
The places you study and live make a big difference to what you get out of university. It’s important to be somewhere that feels like home, but can also surprise you. South Wales offers rich experiences, with Cardiff at the heart.
With campuses in and around Cardiff, you can experience the diversity that south Wales has to offer – the buzz of the cities, the beauty of the coast, and the calm of the countryside.
We have five campuses across three locations, but we’re one university. Every campus is open to you and whatever inspires you, you’re always welcome.
Join us at an open day or live event and discover the opportunities waiting for you at the University of South Wales.
You'll have the chance to explore our campuses at Cardiff, Newport or Pontypridd, meet academic staff and current students, learn about life at USW and student money, and take part in interactive activities related to your course. For those who can't attend an on-campus event, we run online and on-demand events. There's plenty of ways to discover what USW is all about.
Don’t forget to follow us on social to keep up with what’s happening at USW. #USWFamily
Ready to apply? We can't wait to welcome you to the #USWFamily. You can apply via UCAS or USW.
Chat to our students, lecturers or staff. We're here to help answer any questions you may have.
Make friends for life, try out lots of new things and become more independent than ever before.
Where you live is just as important as what you study. Let's find your home away from home.
