Our undergraduate courses give you the appropriate practical and academic training for a career in civil engineering, including structural design, geotechnical design, project management, highway and transport engineering, and sustainable design and development.
Our postgraduate courses help you to develop the critical and analytical skills, alongside management expertise, needed to establish or consolidate your career as a civil engineer.
Attending an open day is the ideal way to learn more about our Civil Engineering courses and get a feel of what it's like to study at the University of South Wales.
Speak to the lecturers and expert staff who teach the courses, take guided tours of our campuses and facilities, view accommodation, speak to our advice team about placement and career opportunities and discuss finances. Plus, speak to current students and hear about their experiences first hand.
We offer a number of postgraduate research programmes including Masters by Research and PhD, which allow you to make an in-depth study of a civil engineering topic that interests you. You can study full-time or part-time, on campus or by distance (subject permitting). The BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). See www.jbm.org.uk for further information. Our MEng meets the requirements for Chartered Engineer status in full, while BEng requires a period of further learning, for example, postgraduate study in civil engineering.
All our Civil Engineering courses offer you the chance to gain hands-on experience of many aspects of civil engineering, including surveying, structural testing, and materials selection. We value the importance of practical learning, so we give you as many opportunities as possible to help prepare you for the workplace.
Civil engineering facilities include new laboratories for structures, materials and geotechnics. These facilities allow us to demonstrate fundamental engineering principles and help students carry out project and research work. We test steel, concrete and masonry lintels, together with other structural materials, to improve product design and discover new methods of construction.
Undertaking a work placement is a great chance for you to apply your current skills and gain new ones from a real-world setting, as well as putting you ahead of the competition when you graduate.
At USW we create graduates who are prepared for tomorrow. We offer learning that reflects employer demands, and equip our students with the skills and experience to succeed. We produce employment-ready graduates who are a step ahead of their competitors.
Our students love the warm and friendly community atmosphere that we have at our Treforest campus, as well as the convenience of living and studying in the same place. From listed buildings to new, modern structures, Treforest reflects the University’s history and ambitions.
Many of our lecturers are at the forefront of their field, producing world-leading research and contributing to advances within their area of expertise. We ensure that our teaching teams are still also strongly connected to their individual industries, ensuring they bring their knowledge of these to their work on our courses.
Dedicated onsite and online support, advice and mentoring will ensure you're heard and supported. Our support services are at the forefront of addressing the challenges that modern-life brings.
Employability is at the heart of everything. So much so that a lot of our teaching is informed by what happens in the real world and the skills you’ll need for your chosen career.
Many of our courses have accreditation from professional, statutory or regulatory bodies. This allows you to gain a qualification recognised in your profession.
