Our design courses are created with industry in mind and we aim to prepare you for the workplace by the time you graduate. This has lead to USW being voted as one of the top 25 Universities in the UK for Design and Crafts (Guardian League Table, 2021).
Our students gain valuable experience through working on a wide variety of professional briefs, which are built into many of our design courses. Our students have worked on live briefs with brands such as Nike, British Airways and Cardiff Blues.
Attending an open day, whether online or on-campus, is the ideal way to learn more about our Design courses and get a feel of what it's like to study at the University of South Wales.
Speak to the lecturers and expert staff who teach the courses, take tours of our campuses and facilities, view accommodation, speak to our advice team about placement and career opportunities and discuss finances. Plus, speak to current students and hear about their experiences first hand.
Supported by expert teaching, our design students have worked on professional briefs from real clients, including Nike, British Airways and Cardiff Blues. We also have unique partnerships with industry that provide opportunities to take on work experience on cutting-edge TV shows, films and video game productions.
Design students from the University have an established record of awards success, collecting prizes at the D&AD New Blood Designer Award, Young Creative Network Awards, and the Caramelite Prize. Many of our former students have also worked on blockbuster films and games that have been nominated for BAFTAS and Oscars.
All our design courses offer a stimulating, creative environment with brand-new dedicated studio space. Our design studios are designed to emulate commercial design studios, from creative collaborative spaces to our industry pitching room. You will also have access to Mac rooms, a wide variety of image capture devices and even Raspberry Pi.
Each year we take time to celebrate the work of our Faculty of Creative Industry students through a festival called 'Gradfest'.
This dedicated festival is home to project work, blogs, videos, social posts and so much more from our Design students.
Take a look at what our students have worked on over the past year or so by viewing the Design Gradfest 2020 website page.
USW Cardiff is based in the heart of the city centre, with major studios and creative agencies within easy reach including BBC, Wolf Studios, S3 Advertising and Golley Slater.
Meet friends for life, join clubs and societies, experience campus life, benefit from a huge array of facilities and equipment and study a course that will shape the rest of your life.
Employability is at the heart of everything we do. Our students have the opportunity to take part in live projects, industry masterclasses, briefs and practical placements. Our partnership with Screen Alliance Wales has resulted in students working on leading TV productions.
In addition to teaching essential technical skills for industry, we ensure students are adept in creativity, problem solving and innovation. With emphasis on ‘problem-led’ learning, we want to ensure that every student is creative-on- demand and job-ready.
