The Paediatric Unit within the Clinical Simulation Centre is dedicated to teaching childcare skills including all aspects of child development.
The CAE’s PediaSim & BabySim and Gaumard’s Premie, 1-year-old and 5-year-old paediatric manikins allow students to practice advanced emergency skills in paediatric care.
The simulators are controlled by computer software, and specific scenarios can be developed to suit the student’s learning pace or the realities of clinical practice. Using high quality CCTV to record procedures allows students to reflect and receive valuable feedback on their performance.
It is widely recognised that this system of monitoring complex clinical skills in a safe, managed environment quickly develops student competence and confidence.
The Paediatric Unit is a fully equipped room which has a selection baby and paediatric manikins that are used for child cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There are also nursing dolls available which can be used for bathing such as the Paediatric Sakura Patient Care Simulator and other nursing procedures such as PEG puncture, catheterising, nose/eye/throat care and injections and for infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.
