Science Placements at USW

At USW we create graduates who are prepared for tomorrow.

We offer learning that reflects employer demands, and equip our students with the skills and experience to succeed. We produce employment-ready graduates who are a step ahead of their competitors.

Professional Practice and Placement

A number of our undergraduate science courses include our professional practice and placement option. We offer a diverse range of placement options, including both sandwich years and a range of summer placements.

Sandwich Placement

Industrial sandwich placements* will take place in the penultimate year of a four-year degree. This will enable you to work with an employer related to your course to gain valuable experience and sector insights.

Summer Placements

The summer placement options will usually take place at the end of your second year between June and September. You may work or volunteer with an employer, organisation, or community group*. Alternatively, we offer a live brief* where you will complete a desk-based work scenario and receive industry standard feedback from the organisation.

Support During Your Placement

During your time completing your placement, you will be assigned an academic mentor, to support you through the process and assessment. You will also have access to our placements team, which offer bespoke services to students during the application process and whilst undertaking your placement.

Travel Bursary

The Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science offers a travel bursary which is available to all students undertaking an undergraduate sandwich degree. Find out more.

*Whilst we will support you to secure a placement, we cannot guarantee placements for every student. Placements with employers will usually require a selection process and will be subject to individual organisation’s discretion.
