Module Overview

The online course lasts one calendar year and is a part-time distance learning course, with six modules per year, each of six weeks duration.

Contemporary issues in public health

This module will provide an overview of the introduction to public health and explore relevant definitions.

Environmental/geopolitical determinants of health

Students will critically use relevant data and evidence to understand the impact of environmental/geopolitical issues and interventions to protect the population’s health.

Data and intelligence

Students will critically use relevant data collected by a variety of methods and techniques to survey and assess a population’s health.

Dealing with complexity

This module will develop knowledge of a range of effective strategic leadership, organisational and management skills in a variety of complex public health situations and contexts, dealing effectively with uncertainty and the unexpected to achieve public health goals.

Protecting the public's health

During this module students will critically apply the evidence base to address issues within public health care systems and develop an understanding of needs assessment and health impact assessment to support evidence-based interventions.

Typical qualification requirements:

As Public health is a multidisciplinary course, we accept a wide range of undergraduate degrees onto our MSc Public Health with a minimum entry criteria of a 2.2. In addition, applicants require a minimum of one year relevant work experience. In your personal statement, we therefore expect you to show a strong interest in Public Health, and to describe any relevant work experience you have in the health field. This might include current or past employment, voluntary work experience, undergraduate research projects or internships.

English language requirements

International applicants will need to have achieved an overall of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component/TOEFL 72 overall and a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing or equivalent.

Studying at university is one of the most significant investments you'll ever make. Whilst you’re studying, you’ll have two main financial obligations – tuition fees and living costs. There’s lots of financial help available from the University of South Wales and external funding sources, that may provide loans (which have to be paid back) and grants, scholarships and bursaries (that don't).

*Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee is anticipated to remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course except as described below.

Please be aware that we may increase the maximum fee for home students on full-time undergraduate courses only where the Welsh Government increases the permitted level of inflation of fees. Fees for all students (including part-time, postgraduate and international students) may be amended in accordance with our applicable Fees and Debt Management Policy.  We will ensure that students are given clear, intelligible, unambiguous and timely information about our courses and costs in good time, ahead of the next academic year.

Additional Costs

As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.

Course Highlights

How you’ll learn

You’ll receive guidance throughout your course with tutor-stimulated academic discussions, which are based on clinically-rich case scenarios. These usually occur within groups of 10-15 students, allowing you to clearly communicate with both your tutor and fellow students.

You will also participate in a combination of module activities that may be group and/or individual based, dependent on the module.

Due to the online nature of the course, you will be expected to regularly login and participate in the course - ideally on a daily basis. Students are recommended to spend around two hours per day on their studies.

Facilities

As part of your online studies you will have access to the Learning Resources Centre materials at the University of South Wales. FINDit is the University’s portal which allows you to search for over 13,000 full-text journal articles, news articles, conference proceedings and approximately 160 databases via one search box- the majority of these materials are accessible online. Interactive study skills modules are available to study via Blackboard to enable you to utilise the library services fully.
