A University of South Wales (USW) graduate was among those who worked on films that took home awards at last night’s British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

Rosie Walker, who graduated in 2012 from the BA (Hons) Visual Effects and Motion Graphics degree, was part of the team at Double Negative which worked on the film Tenet, which scooped the Special Visual Effects award.

A number of other USW graduates also worked on productions that were nominated for Bafta awards.

These included:

In the Animated Film category, the Netflix/Pearl Studios film Over The Moon was nominated. USW alumni Matt Jones, a storyboard artist who graduated from BA (Hons) Animation in 1996; and Kieran McKay and Lucas Maxfield, both 3D Character Lookdev Artists, who graduated from BA (Hons) Computer Animation in 2013, worked on the film.

In the same category, the Caroon Saloon film Wolfwalkers was also nominated. USW alumni who worked on the film included Bryony Evans, a Senior Clean-up Artist who graduated in 2012; Gemma Roberts, a Senior 2D Animator, who also graduated in 2012, and Matt Jones, a Storyboard Artist who graduated in 1996. All graduated from the BA (Hons) Animation course.

The Midnight Sky was nominated in the Special Visual Effect category. USW graduates who worked on the film’s production included Beth Warner, who graduated in BA (Hons) Computer Animation in 2015 and worked as a Visual Effects Co-ordinator, while Ellen Jaram, who graduated from BA Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in 2017, was a Digital Artist.

In the same category, The One And Only was nominated, on which 2014 graduate Chaitan Joshi worked as a Layout Artist, and 2015 graduate Kathryn Chandler worked as an Animator – both graduated in BA (Hons) Computer Animation.

Tom Ware, Director of Production and Performance at USW’s Faculty Of Creative Industries, which is based at the University’s Cardiff Campus, said: “We’re thrilled to learn of Rosie Walker’s BAFTA win.

“Along with the many other FIlm & TV School Wales graduates nominated this year, Rosie’s achievement is a wonderful reminder of the huge depth of screen industries talent USW continues to help support.”

Jack Phillips, Senior Lecturer Visual Effects & Motion Graphics at USW, said: “It is great to see Rosie’s work being recognised as part of the Tenet team.

“Her talents as an artist and as a trainer have gone on to inspire and support many others from USW on the Visual Effects and Motion Graphics course that have themselves become part of such an exciting, vibrant, creative industry.”
