Summer school gives pupils a feel for university life
26 July, 2023
University of South Wales (USW) welcomed 35 students to its Treforest Campus this month for an overnight residential as part of The USW and Reaching Wider Summer School.
The event was free of charge and gave Year 12 students from schools and colleges across the UK the chance to gain authentic experience of university life. It was specifically designed to support potential students who face barriers to the educational progression and are currently underrepresented in higher education.
From social activities, staying in Halls of Residence, and meeting other like-minded students, students enjoyed the immersive experience. They also had the opportunity to participate in subject-specific sessions and gain important advice and information.
USW’s enthusiastic ambassadors were also on hand throughout the residential to chat to the students, giving insights into life as a student at USW.
The Summer School aimed to help students complete their UCAS application forms and to set them apart from other students by demonstrating a commitment to extra-curricular study.
USW and Reaching Wider also hoped that they would be able to form connections with prospective students who may require the University’s support services, such as the Disability and Wellbeing Service, Learning Services, and Accommodation.
All attendees of the Summer School who enroll on a full-time three or four year undergraduate degree course at USW in September 2024 will be eligible for the USW Summer School Bursary. The bursary is worth £500 and will aim to support with technology or other course-related materials and costs.
The Summer School was put together thanks to efforts from various departments at USW and the Reaching Wider team, particularly Student Services, the Student Recruitment team in Future Students, Catering and Estates, and Conferencing and Events.
