To celebrate Pride Month, first year Law student Lila Causey tells us why championing diversity is so important.
The 18-year-old, from Peterborough, came to USW after being impressed by the positive student satisfaction rates of the LLB (Hons) Law degree.
Soon after starting their course, Lila became a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group for the subject area, as they wanted to be part of helping USW to build a strong, understanding support system for people of all identities.
Lila said: “I was asked to join the Law EDI group after I was given an introductory task on my course to write about myself.
"I wrote about my past involvement with politics and debate in my sixth form, and my passion for informing and educating people on the injustices that affect minorities every day.
“I value Pride as a way for everyone to celebrate their identity, and I love seeing the community gain more and more support every year.
“Being non-binary and queer, I found that it means so much to me to see genders and sexualities of all varieties represented and proud to be themselves.
“I believe Pride Month should be celebrated no matter your identity, to send strength to those who struggle with their identity and to raise awareness into the inequality that LGBTQ+ people face.”
Hannah Coburn, lecturer in Law at USW, added: “As a very keen member of the Law EDI group, I was absolutely delighted that Lila, along with numerous other members of the course, decided to join.
“The impact that the group has been able to have increases with every new voice and perspective that engages, and I have been so blessed to have borne witness to so many voices coming together to facilitate positive and lasting change.
“Lila and their peers are investing their time in change, not just for the students surrounding them now, but also for the students of tomorrow.”
