Dr James Gravelle has been appointed as the University of South Wales’s (USW’s) new Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

James is currently the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Transformation at USW and has been helping to lead the work to enhance our academic delivery and systems to support a sustainable future.

James joined the University of Glamorgan (now USW) in 2008 as a Research Assistant, before holding a number of roles in the former Centre for Police Sciences whilst also completing his PhD.

More recently he was Head of School of Health, Sport and Professional Practice, before becoming the Deputy Dean, and then Dean, of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education.

James will be taking up the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor from Monday 3 February 2025.

Vice-Chancellor, Dr Ben Calvert, said: “I am delighted that James will be taking up the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor at USW. James has held many leadership roles at USW, most recently helping to lead the ongoing work to transform our academic delivery and portfolio, putting students at the heart of the delivery. Prior to this James led the largest of our faculties, with a commitment to developing external partnerships and the professional delivery of our courses.

“He has a great personal commitment to USW and our students, and I look forward to continuing working with him as we implement our USW 2030 Strategy.”

James said: “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and to continue our work to transform our academic delivery, upholding the highest standards for our students, colleagues, and stakeholders. I greatly admire USW for its dynamism and ambition, which is at the forefront of our approach as we continue to work towards the aims of the USW 2030 Strategy. It is a challenging time for the HE sector at the moment, but we are enacting plans that will anchor our sustainability, continue to foster partnerships, and have a positive impact for our region and beyond.”
