University receives funding for new campus allotment and sensory garden
2 July, 2026
The University has secured a funding package worth approximately £17,000 through Keep Wales Tidy's Local Places for Nature initiative to create a new allotment and sensory garden on campus.
The project will see three raised-planter allotment beds and a sensory garden established on land behind J Block. The funding follows a successful application process and site visit, with confirmation of the award received in May 2026.
"This new allotment will be an excellent addition to the greenspace on Treforest campus. It will help to boost biodiversity and fulfill part of USW's Biodiversity Action Plan. It also provides a great opportunity for staff and students to get outdoors and work together to grow fruit and veg, and quite literally reap the rewards". Aimee Ward, chair of the action group
Installation is scheduled to begin in September, with materials arriving in phases over several weeks. The new space will support biodiversity, sustainability and wellbeing while enhancing the campus environment for staff, students and visitors.
“Having the access to a garden means a lot to students. It's a place where you can relax and enjoy nature while also getting hands on involvement. In terms for science-based classes such as IWB or Biology, we can learn in person the processes which occur in plant growth and animal involvement. I can say that many people are excited to see the process and assist with this project.” Hailey Forrest, Chair of SU Nature Society.
