Armed Forces Day | University of South Wales joins Wales Defence & Security Cluster
27 June, 2026
The University of South Wales (USW) has joined the Wales Defence & Security Cluster, strengthening its commitment to support Wales's growing defence and national security sector.
The Wales Defence & Security Cluster brings together industry, academia, and government organisations to accelerate defence and security capability development, strengthen collaboration, and increase access to innovation and growth opportunities. Membership includes universities, research organisations, SMEs, prime contractors, and specialist technology companies working across defence, security, cyber, engineering, and critical national infrastructure.
USW's membership will provide new opportunities for academic collaboration, knowledge exchange, research partnerships, and student engagement with organisations operating across the sector.
The move builds on the University's established commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community. USW was one of the first higher education institutions in the UK to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and received the Gold Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme in recognition of its support for service personnel, veterans, reservists, and their families.
Professor Louise Bright, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise, Engagement and Partnerships, said: “Joining the Wales Defence & Security Cluster is an important step in reinforcing our contribution to Wales's defence, security, and resilience landscape.
"The Cluster creates opportunities to work together on shared challenges, innovation, and skills development. As a university with expertise across policing, security, cyber, engineering, and leadership, we are well placed to contribute to those conversations and collaborations.”
