Choosing where to live
Where you live is just as important as what you learn. Halls are a big part of your student experience and there’s accommodation at all three of our locations.
Pontypridd Accommodation Cardiff Accommodation Newport AccommodationWe know the idea of moving out can be daunting. Don't worry, we're here to make sure you find the right place. There are lots of accommodation options to fit all budgets and lifestyles.
What are your options?
University-owned halls
If you decide to live in Pontypridd, you can choose to live in our halls of residence on campus. These halls are run directly by USW, and you apply through the university. Living in halls is a brilliant way to make friends and feel part of the USW family, particularly in your first year. There’s lots going on, and you’re only a few minutes’ walk from your morning lectures.
Private halls
If you want to live in Cardiff or Newport you can live in halls, too. The only difference is USW doesn't own the halls there. Instead, we partner with carefully selected providers of private university halls. It’s exactly the same warm, welcoming vibe. You’ll meet tonnes of USW students, plus students from other universities and colleges.
Private house
Another option is to rent a private house or flat with friends. It’s your own space and you can choose your house mates. But it does come with all the admin of renting a house, and you’ll likely have to commit to it for a full year. Our students who rent private houses tend to do so from their second year onwards, rather than when they first arrive.
Living at home
If you’re local to the region, then living at home is always an option!
Think You’ve Found the One? Make sure it ticks all the boxes
You've looked at Halls, you've explored private student rentals and think you've found the perfect solution for you? Before you sign the dotted line, here's a final checklist.
Is it affordable?
Money is one of the most important (and obvious) things to consider when choosing where to live. Based on your student funding and your budget, can you afford to pay the rent every month? Take some time to work out costs. For instance, student halls may appear more expensive than other options but as they include bills and amenities, they may be cheaper in the long run.
Does it offer everything you’re looking for?
Grab a notebook and write down your accommodation ‘must-haves.’ You might need a wheelchair accessible room or family accommodation. If you’re a person who values their own space, a studio apartment or an ensuite room is perfect for you. If you’re a fitness fanatic, then an on-site gym will be right up your street. Compare everything an accommodation offers against your list.
Will it be help me make friends?
Living in halls offers a real advantage, particularly in your first year, as there are just so many opportunities to socialise. Our Cardiff and Newport halls are also open to students from different universities, so you’ll meet loads of interesting people.
Is it in a good location?
Living in halls is a no-brainer when it comes to picking a convenient location. But if you choose to live further away, make sure there’s enough university or public transport options available so you can get to campus.
Is it legit?
Before you sign the contract, check the landlord is accredited with ‘Rent Smart Wales.’ This will make for smoother sailing if anything goes wrong later. Always view a property before you commit. Make sure you read the contract thoroughly before signing it.
