Interview advice and preparation

An interview doesn’t have to feel daunting. At the University of South Wales, it’s our way of getting to know you and understanding your commitment to your chosen course. It also helps us make sure you share the values of the profession and are ready to care for others in a professional setting.

It’s your chance to meet our team, show us the person behind the application, and decide if USW is the right place for you.

Your interview panel will include a lecturer, a clinician, and sometimes a service user. You’ll be asked questions about your chosen field, your understanding of the role, and the qualities needed to become a nurse or midwife.

Think of it as an opportunity to reflect on your skills, experiences, and what makes you a great fit for your future career in healthcare.

Common Interview Questions

We’ve gathered some of the typical interview questions, so you can feel confident that you know everything that will be asked of you at your interview.

  • What do you think a midwife does?
  • Have you spoken up on someone’s behalf especially if they had concerns?
  • How does it make you feel when you hear of people being mistreated?

  • Why do you want to become a qualified midwife?
  • What inspired you to consider this profession?
  • Why do you think you are well-suited to become a future midwife?

  • What parts of the course do you think you will find most challenging?
  • What are you looking forward to most about the course?
  • Where are you hoping to make the biggest difference? Why?

  • What qualities do you need to be professional?
  • What do you do that demonstrates professional behaviour?
  • How do your values align with those of the NHS and how do you demonstrate those values?
