Interview advice and preparation

At the University of South Wales we use the interview process to talk about your reasons for choosing the course, and answer any questions you may have. You will be invited to attend your preference of an online or in-person interview at the Newport Campus, which will include giving a short presentation.

Your presentation (with slides) must explain how your experience and qualifications demonstrates your suitability to teach in the further, adult and vocational education sector. You will also be asked to submit a piece of academic writing.

Please include your full name on the document.  If you are a graduate, you should send a marked piece of academic writing from your degree OR if you are a non-graduate, please send a 500-word piece of your writing using the following questions (as a guide only):

  • What subject are you intending to teach, and what are the range of qualifications and courses you are interested in and likely to teach on?
  • Who are you expecting your learners to be? What are their likely backgrounds, strengths, support needs and future aspirations?
  • How will your life experiences and qualifications so far be useful in your development as a teacher?
  • What are your main areas for development as a student teacher, and what are you looking forward to on the course?

  • What subject are you intending to teach?
  • Who are you expecting your learners to be?
  • How does it make you feel when you help someone struggling?

  • Why do you want to become a teacher within the Post Compulsory sector?
  • What inspired you to consider this profession?
  • Why do you think you are well-suited to become a future teacher?

  • What parts of the course do you think you will find most challenging?
  • What are you looking forward to most about the course?
  • Where are you hoping to make the biggest difference?

  • What qualities do you need to be professional?
  • What do you think demonstrates professional behaviour?
