Module Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry course will include six modules, each of six weeks' duration, studied in one calendar year, entirely online.

Recognition of Psychiatric Disorders in Primary Care
Equipping healthcare professionals with knowledge and skills to confidently diagnose a
psychiatric disorder based on a biopsychosocial model, underpinned by a critical exploration and understanding of a classification system.

Common Psychiatric Disorders
Equipping healthcare professionals with knowledge and skills that will assist in the diagnosis of common and major psychiatric presentations such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychosis and personality disorders.

Psychiatric Disorders in Later Life
Enhancing the unique skills needed for looking after adults with major psychiatric disorders like depression, delirium, dementia and anxiety. You will update the knowledge and information needed for diagnosis and management including non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions.

Atypical Psychiatric Presentations

Enabling you to recognise and manage a range of complex and atypical psychiatric
presentations with a high prevalence in a primary care setting.

Early Years, Learning Disability and Neuropsychiatry
Equipping healthcare professionals with the ability to diagnose and appropriately manage or refer the most common presentations in young people including emotional disorders, conduct disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Substance Misuse and Mental Health
Familiarising healthcare professionals with the key terms in substance misuse to facilitate history taking and use of assessment tools to formulate a management plan.

Typical qualification requirements:

To secure your place on the course, applicants will typically hold a first degree or equivalent (including international qualifications) in a relevant professional healthcare field, such as a medical or nursing degree. Registered healthcare professionals without these recognised qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account.

In some cases, applicants may be asked to submit a piece of work for assessment in order to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at postgraduate level, and demonstrate the requisite clinical and professional knowledge.

English language requirements

International applicants will need to have achieved an overall of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component/TOEFL 72 overall and a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing or equivalent.

How you'll learn

Although you’ll be learning entirely online, you will be part of a group with 10 to 15 other
students - to share ideas, debate scenarios and develop best practice with.
Once you have secured your place on the course, you will be invited to an Online Induction Day Webinar.
You will be assessed through a combination of your input on case scenarios on our discussion forum, a case-based exam, module activity and your own personal reflection.

Facilities

The Clinical Psychiatry course is delivered via Moodle – our virtual learning platform. You
will be given full guidance on how to make the most of Moodle, including the discussion
forums and the social forum.
You will have access to all of the University’s learning materials including online journals and publications.
