Postgraduate Diploma in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (Online delivery)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine provides a unique integrated approach to preventative cardiovascular medicine and focuses on applying scientific principles to direct patient care. Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine is a rapidly evolving branch of medicine involved in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. Run with with the collaborative partner Diploma MSc, the course creates professionals who can independently assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine.

It will develop problem solving and clinical skills together with preparing students to take a leadership role in this medical area. You will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and competence; deliver management strategies for the investigation and treatment of patients at increased cardiovascular risk; develop and deliver interventions for the wider population and safely use preventative cardiovascular approaches in specific cases. On successful completion, you could go on to study the MSc Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine.

The Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine Postgraduate Diploma course will provide an integrated approach to preventative cardiovascular medicine, focusing on applying scientific principles to direct patient care and create healthcare professionals who can independently assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to preventative cardiovascular medicine.

The course consists of six modules per year, each of six weeks’ duration:

Principles of Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (20 credits) – This module focuses on the science underpinning preventative cardiovascular medicine and the assessment of cardiovascular risk as applied to clinical practice.

Cardiovascular Risk Management (20 credits) – This modules aims to develop a critical understanding of nutrition and lifestyle factors in the development of cardiovascular disease.

Lipid Metabolism in Clinical Practice (20 credits) – This module develops a comprehensive understanding of lipid metabolism and disorders, and their presentation and assessment in clinical practice.

Management of Lipid Disorders (20 credits) – This module ensures that students develop a comprehensive understanding of lipid metabolism and disorders, and their presentation and assessment in clinical practice.

Hypertension: Diagnosis and Management (20 credits) – This module enables students to develop a critical understanding of the pathophysiology and management of hypertension.

Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine in Special Situations (20 credits) – This module involves gaining a critical understanding of preventative cardiovascular medicine in a wide range of relevant clinical conditions.

Teaching

Although you’ll be learning online you will be part of a group with 10 to 15 other students. Your self-directed distance learning will be guided by tutor-stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios.

You’ll do a combination of individual and group projects, and you’ll have a reflective practice portfolio to help you consider how what you’re learning on the course can be translated into everyday work and practice.

You’ll have the support of a dedicated team who will help you with any challenges you may face - from help with navigating our online learning platform to advice on what you need to do to pass the course and meet deadlines.

Once you have secured your place on the course, you will be invited to an Online Induction Day Webinar. This will give you the opportunity to participate in study skills workshops on Harvard Referencing, scientific and reflective writings, and levels of evidence in preparation for your studies.

It is not compulsory for you to attend our Induction Day, but it is recommended as it’ll provide you with a sturdy introduction to the course.

Assessment

The obesity and weight management course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment, embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the six modules has the same assessment format:

Reflective Journal - 10%
Module activity - 20%
Case based examination - 30%

You will be assigned a dedicated expert tutor who will facilitate clinical case discussions with the group and monitor, assess and mark your work throughout each module.

Due to the online nature of the course, you will be expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module, ideally on a daily basis.

Facilities

As part of your online studies you will have access to the Learning Resources Centre materials at the University of South Wales. FINDit is the University’s portal which allows you to search for over 13,000 full-text journal articles, news articles, conference proceedings and approximately 160 databases via one search box, the majority of these materials are accessible online. Interactive study skills modules are available to study via Blackboard to enable you to utilise the library services fully.

  
To secure your place on the course, applicants will typically hold a first degree or equivalent (including international qualifications) in a relevant professional healthcare field, such as a medical or nursing degree. Registered healthcare professionals without these recognised qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account.

In some cases, applicants may be asked to submit a piece of work for assessment in order to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at postgraduate level, and demonstrate the requisite clinical and professional knowledge.

English Language Requirements

Proficiency in the English Language is also essential to completing our courses. If English is NOT your first language, we ask for proof of competency during the application process. We are able to accept an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 for each band) or an equivalent qualification.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

The course promotes and enhances professional skills and knowledge among its students that have direct relevance and application to the demands of their working roles. There is increasing competition for employment in the healthcare arena, with increasing specialisation. It is envisaged that students will be GPs, medical trainees in Diabetes, Vascular surgery, Cardiology, Medical Biochemistry in addition to Allied Health Professionals, and Practice Nurses running CV clinics.
