Children and University Life - FAQs
Some common questions about children and university life.
Children are permitted on campus but must be under the supervision of a parent or guardian at all times.
There are locations on campus which are restricted to children.
Children are not allowed to be in teaching sessions, except where there are requirements for breast feeding a young child.
No, children should not be attending teaching sessions. This is because of the disruption they can cause for other students and the content of teaching may not be appropriate for them.
Some childcare is available on and near campus, please see our childcare page.
Children are allowed to visit the library if they are accompanying an adult student or member of USW staff. Children must be supervised at all times and are the responsibility of the accompanying adult. All visitors to the library, including children, are expected to follow the library’s guidance for Considerate Behaviour. Children must not be allowed to behave in any way that may disturb or inconvenience other library users.
If you are visiting the library with more than one child, you must take steps to ensure that you can control their behaviour and provide adequate supervision at all times.
We would discourage you from spending extended periods of time working in library study areas if you are accompanied by children. Our libraries are adult environments designed for academic purposes and are not suitable places for young children. If it is unavoidable, you must use spaces designed for social/group study. Children are not permitted in silent study rooms or bookable study pods. Please ensure that children are occupied with quiet activities if they are spending extended periods of time in the library.
You must not bring children with you when attending organised library inductions, tours, workshops or other events. The exception is where it is deemed necessary because you are breastfeeding (in compliance with the Equality Act 2010). Further information can be found in the Student guidance on Pregnancy. In these cases, the library staff organising the event should be notified in advance that an infant will be present.
If you experience an unexpected family commitment outside your control – such as difficulties with childcare when you are required to attend an assessment. You may claim extenuating circumstances. Evidence for your claim could be a letter from appropriate independent body, such as childcare provider/school/employer/medical practitioner advising of the situation.

The University of South Wales does not provide family accommodation.
It is important that you are aware that private sector accommodation is in extremely high demand in the area the University is in, and in the UK in general, and costs have increased significantly in recent years. Monthly rental costs for a house start from £800 per month in Pontypridd and Newport, and a 2/3 bedroom house can cost more than £1,500 per month in Cardiff. Students, especially those with dependants and families, are finding it increasingly difficult to secure suitable accommodation in the direct locality of the University.
We therefore ask you to initially come to the UK on your own, until you have secured accommodation for your family. Your family can join you once you have found somewhere suitable to live.
USW's Accommodation Team can send you details of local estate agents, but we advise you to look for and secure accommodation by your own means as soon as possible. Please note that the University also has an arrangement with an accommodation guarantor company. To find out more please email [email protected].
