What is your role in supporting students with dyslexia?

As a Disability Adviser, I work closely with dyslexic students to identify any barriers to learning which might affect their university studies.

What are the typical signs of dyslexia?

There is a common misconception that dyslexia only affects someone’s ability to read, write and spell. However, it can affect many areas, including organisation and memory.

Everyone with dyslexia will have a unique profile of strengths and challenges.

As a USW student, what should I do if I suspect I have dyslexia?

Whilst some of our students receive a diagnosis of dyslexia before they come to university, many wouldn’t have. You can gain access to dyslexia screening and diagnostic assessments during your studies.

If you suspect you may have dyslexia, you can complete our free online screener Quickscan. It will assess your responses and let you know if you show indicators of dyslexia and would benefit from having a full diagnostic assessment.

How will I be assessed for dyslexia?

If you would like to have a diagnostic assessment, please complete our Assessment Request Form. Our Assessments team will then contact you to discuss your responses, assessment options and assessment funding. For further information on our assessment provision, please visit our Dyslexia Screening and Assessments page.

Independent assessors carry out the assessments, online or in-person. They take around 2-3 hours to complete. The Assessor will ask questions about your strengths and challenges, family history and educational experiences, undertaking a range of cognitive tests. It enables them to gain a full picture of your abilities, identifying and diagnosing specific learning difficulties.

How long will I have to wait for the results?

You will receive your assessment report within 10-15 working days of your assessment.

What support can I access if I have dyslexia?

Every individual with dyslexia will have a unique profile of strengths and challenges. Therefore, they will require a tailored individual support plan and support package.

These might typically include; exam adjustments (e.g. extra time, use of a computer, scribe support), Specialist Study Skills Tuition support and specialist assistive technology. Our Disability Adviser team will work closely with you to identify and help you gain access to the appropriate support and adjustments to meet your individual needs.
