Car Parking and Car Sharing:

How do I arrange a car share to travel to and from the University?

Advertise yourself:
Whether you drive yourself and would like to share the cost of your commute with your fellow staff, or you don’t drive and would like a lift to work, you can arrange to car share either by asking around the staff in your office, or by placing a message on The market place on Connect.

Charge:

Work out what you’d normally spend on petrol (and tolls if applicable) getting to work, and divide that by the number of people in the car. Remember to include your own share of the costs. From Cardiff to Pontypridd costs around £10-15 a week in an average car (not including tax and maintenance, but generally this is the driver’s responsibility).

Useful Information on Car Sharing:

Car sharing does not invalidate your insurance, as long as you don’t charge your passengers more than the running costs of the journey. Please do check with your insurance company however for clarification.

You don’t have to take anyone who asks: if you’d only feel happy sharing with someone of the same sex, or someone you know, for example, just specify it in your advert.
You don’t need to have a car to car share. If you just need a lift, advertise the fact to drivers on Marketplace and offer to pay them for the petrol.
The University would benefit from staff car sharing, the car-parks would have more space, the roads would be quieter, and as a result you may even get home quicker.

Staff parking on campus:

The University strongly recommends that you consider alternative travel arrangements to driving wherever possible. We strongly encourage all Staff and Students to use public transport where possible.

There are shuttle buses that complement public transport provisions and make travelling between campuses easier.

A staff-parking permit will cost £7.50 on the monthly payment plan via your salary. to apply for parking please complete a Staff Application for Parking Permit and returning to Estates Security. VIP parking permits will be priced at twice the standard permit cost, at £15 per month and are only available to the Executive Team.

Staff will no longer be able to purchase parking permits via the online store

For further information contact Treforest Security Gatehouse on 01443 482057 or email Estates Security.

Charges:

If driving is your only option and you do not wish to purchase via salary you will need to pay per day to park in the Llantwit Road and Glyntaff car parks. Daily users of these car parks will pay £1 for up to 5 hours parking and £2 for any period over 5 hours up until midnight.

Overnight parking is available and charged at the daily rate.

Opening Hours:
The Treforest  and Glyntaff car parks are open 24/7.

Motorbikes:

When arriving at the Treforest campus, motorbike riders are to report to the main gatehouse to register your vehicle and they will be informed where to park. There is no charge for parking a motorbike at Treforest. All motorbikes must be registered with Security.

Safety:

Staff safety is of paramount concern and all of our car parks are monitored 24 hours a day by campus security. For staff who are concerned about their safety there is the ability to request an escort to their cars. If you require a member of Security staff to escort you, please speak directly to a member of security  on the Treforest or Glyntaff campus and they will be happy to assist.

Car Parking (Including Disabled Parking Permits)

Parking for Staff with disabilities:
Disabled parking permits are issued free of charge to staff who are in receipt of a blue badge (a copy of which must be provided) to enable them to park within the campus. If you are not in receipt of a blue badge, then supporting medical evidence will need to be provided with your application and a pro-rata fee will be charged for the permit. The fee will depend on the length of time remaining in the academic year.

If you have a temporary disability then you may also apply for disabled on-campus parking. Supporting medical evidence must be provided with your application. Staff may also be required to discuss their own individual circumstances with a Disability Advisor with each case being assessed on an individual basis.

To apply for temporary disabled parking please contact Occupational Health.

We would like to remind all staff that the University cannot guarantee a parking space due to limited spaces being available.

Off-campus Residential Parking Permits:

If you have a car which you park on the road outside your house, in Treforest, you may need a resident’s parking permit to do so.

Residents who live within a residents parking area and who keep and use a car will normally qualify for a permit. This will enable you to park in spaces which are reserved for permit holders. Parking in a residents permit area without a valid permit can lead to a fine. You can find information on parking permits on the Rhondda Cynon Taff and Cardiff Council websites.

Alternative car parks in Pontypridd:
The first few weeks of the academic year are especially busy, with a massive demand for the 2000 available car parking spaces for students, staff and visitors. During term, all parking spaces can be taken by 8.45am, so staff who drive often have to arrive on campus before 9am. The increased traffic also puts pressure on the local road network, often causing long delays in excess of 30 minutes to get to the student car park. If you do need to drive there are alternative car parks in Pontypridd Town Centre.
