It didn’t take long for me to feel at home.

Hi, I'm Nafees, from Bangladesh. While searching for a university with the ideal Environmental Science program, I discovered that USW has a regional office in Bangladesh. They were incredibly supportive throughout my application journey, helping me navigate the process. Since childhood, I've felt a strong calling to contribute positively to the environment, particularly in the face of climate change. I was drawn to USW’s Environmental Science program, which is expertly designed to foster both academic knowledge and practical experience. Studying in Wales's stunning and varied landscapes, from mountains and forests to coastlines and glacial formations, provides the perfect backdrop for environmental studies.

The welcome week felt warm and inclusive; it didn’t take long for me to feel at home. I attended the Freshers’ Fair on the Treforest campus, where I got a sense of the lively community here. The support was exceptional, and I quickly settled in, with amenities like the train station, pharmacy, launderette, and supermarkets conveniently nearby. The transition was smoother than I expected, making me feel that I truly belong here.

The Environmental Science program at USW offers hands-on experience that I highly value, such as fieldwork and lab work.

In my second week, we travelled to Cornwall for a week of residential fieldwork, and in my final year, we’ll be conducting fieldwork in Belize. I’ve especially enjoyed the remote sensing studies and lab sessions. The lecturers are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and passionate about environmental science, making them lifelong role models.

In my time at USW so far, I’ve been actively involved with both the USW Bangladesh Society and the USW Nature Society. Over the years, I’ve held roles as Cultural Executive, Treasurer, and Secretary for Bangladesh Society. These meaningful experiences have allowed me to connect with others while contributing to campus life.

South Wales is filled with remarkable places to explore. I especially love the hidden gems- Pen Pych waterfall and Port Eynon Bay at the Gower. Other favourites include the Sunflower Fields at Rhossili Bay and St Fagans National Museum. The charming “pink shop” in Treforest and the Welsh Cake shop at Pontypridd Market are my go-to spots for a treat.

As a Student Ambassador, I enjoy sharing my experience with prospective students through the UniBuddy platform. Studying at an institution like USW and in a location like Wales is an unforgettable experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to international students seeking an enriching education and a vibrant community.
