The course I'm studying is a unique course with professional accreditation.
My name is Justin Ozioma Amanze, I am from Nigeria and studied Environmental Management (Pollution Control Option) at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria. I then decided to study MSc Safety, Health, and Environmental Management at USW.
I chose to study at USW as the course I’m learning is a unique course which has a professional accreditation, giving me an additional competitive advantage. USW is among the top-ranked universities in the UK with excellent Lecturers and quality courses. Their tuition fee payment plan flexibility is another good reason I chose to study here.
There were a few culture shocks I had to adjust to arriving in the UK. I am always putting on my jacket/sweater to keep my body warm. Having come from a hot weather country like Nigeria that experiences cold during the harmattan season which lasts for only about 3-4 months. But here in the UK, the case is different, I guess it gets cold all year round even in summer.
Also, I had to acquaint myself with drinking coffee, because it seems Britain doesn’t do without coffee.

During my studies, I subscribed to receive daily emails and news from IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health). This meant I received an email announcement for the IOSH student competition - I decided to give it a try even though I had little confidence and I concluded that I wouldn’t mind coming among the runners-up. But I was surprised and elated when the IOSH panel declared me the winner.
If I had to give advice for future international students, my advice is never to doubt your capabilities and take your studies seriously. Always partake in competitions and trust the process. Also, as an international student, please always abide by the rules and regulations of the school and the country.
My aspirations for the future are focused on making important contributions to the field of occupational health and safety. Some of my goals and ambitions are professional development, promoting a safety culture, and career advancement, I hope to advance my career by taking leadership roles in the field and I’m keen to work with companies and organizations committed to maintaining high safety standards.
