REFUGEE SANCTUARY SCHEME
The USW Undergraduate Refugee Sanctuary Scheme provides support to a limited number of eligible refugees via free English language tuition of 15 weeks or less prior to starting an undergraduate course at the University. The bursaries will be allocated in order of date of complete course and bursary applications, once all have been allocated, the scheme will close.
Fees and Funding Scholarships and BursariesPlease note that undertaking full-time study may have an impact on your eligibility for UK government benefits. You are advised to contact the Welsh Refugee Council if you need further advice on this.
How does it work?
- The USW Undergraduate Refugee Sanctuary Scheme will cover the full tuition fee costs for the Pre-sessional English Language Programme of 15 weeks or less for eligible applicants.
- The USW Undergraduate Refugee Sanctuary Scheme will also cover the cost of an English Language Assessment test through the University's Centre for International English if required.
- Applicants will be given guidance, where required, in the course application process by the University’s Enquiries and Admissions department.
- Applicants will be permitted to apply direct to the University. Please note, if you are applying to more than one University, you are required to make an application via UCAS. Practical support will be available from the University’s Student Money Advice Team to assist applications for undergraduate degree funding.
To be considered for this additional support, you must:
- Be assessed by the University’s Enquiries and Admissions department as a refugee, having been granted leave under the Ukraine Schemes (the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme and the Ukraine Extension Scheme), having been granted leave outside the Immigration Rules for a reason connected to the conflict in Ukraine a persons granted leave under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) or the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ARCS) or granted Humanitarian Protection as the result of an Asylum Claim and therefore eligible to pay the UK home rate of fees.
- Be assessed by the University’s Immigration & International Student Advice Team as a refugee, having been granted leave under the Ukraine Schemes (the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme and the Ukraine Extension Scheme), having been granted leave outside the Immigration Rules for a reason connected to the conflict in Ukraine or a persons granted leave under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) or the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ARCS) with the right to study in the UK or granted Humanitarian Protection as the result of an Asylum Claim
- Be eligible for UK student support from the Student Loans Company for the duration of the degree course (if you have studied previously at a university or college in the UK this might prevent you from receiving full support. Please contact us for advice if this is the case. See below for contact details)
- Have applied to study a full time 3 or 4 year undergraduate degree or a CertHE course at the University of South Wales
- Be accepted on a Pre-sessional English Language Programme at the University of South Wales prior to commencing your undergraduate degree or CertHE course
- Accept the University’s offer of the place on your chosen course and the Pre-Sessional English course on a firm basis
You will be sent an email containing a link to an online application form once you have been offered a place on a course. The email will be sent to the email address listed on your course application to the University.
The Student Money Advice Team will notify you of your eligibility by email, using the email address listed on the scheme application form. We aim to send you email confirmation that your application has been received within ten working days, the email will also include details regarding the decision making process.
