Creative GradFest21: From farming to furnishings – Ellyw is ready for the design industry
30 June, 2021
Interior Design student Ellyw Jones is about to graduate from the University of South Wales (USW) and has already started work as a freelance designer. As part of Creative GradFest21, Ellyw, from Welshpool, mid Wales, tells us more about her time at USW.
Why did you choose USW?
“I chose to study at USW because I loved the creativity and the high standard that was held across the University. It was also the best Open Day I went to, and I also really liked that the lecturer of the course could speak Welsh, as it is my first language and I felt as if that was accommodated for me throughout my time studying the course.
Have you always wanted to work in design?
Yes, I’ve always wanted to work in design as I've always found a connection within this field of work.
I live on a farm just outside of Welshpool in a small valley called Cwm-Nant-yr-Eira, so this sector is a little different to my home life!
How has the course prepared you for the industry?
The course has prepared me hugely to succeed within the industry, as we were able to work on various live projects with real clients, and had the opportunity to collaborate and showcase our work to some Interior Design companies in Cardiff, including Paramount Interiors.
Being able to work with people from the industry early on gave me an accurate representation of what expectations were being held within the industry, and motivated me further to succeed.
As well as this, the course offers a placement year for all students after completing the second year, and I was fortunate enough to spend time with Studio Severn Design in Cardiff. This experience was also extremely beneficial as it introduced me to various new design elements and really expanded my knowledge, which I will be forever grateful for. I was fortunate to carry on working with the company throughout my final year at University, which gave me the challenge of balancing work and study.
What’s next for you after graduating?
I have now started freelancing for various designers and small design studios, which I am excited about. I wish to develop as a designer and explore different avenues by working in freelance for the time being.
Any advice for someone who wants to study design and work in the industry?
I would highly recommend taking any experience that you can get, even if it's a couple of hours! And don’t be afraid to ask questions; to be constantly learning is a good thing.”
