The University of South Wales (USW) welcomed hundreds of visitors to its stand at the National Eisteddfod last week, when the Welsh language cultural festival came to Pontypridd.

From the Maes at Ynysangharad Park, to USW’s Treforest Campus, people of all ages took part in a packed programme of activities and events that showcased all the University has to offer.

During the week, visitors enjoyed workshops and demonstrations from a range of subject areas, including Psychology, Sport, Science and Technology, Healthcare, Education, Fashion, Film, Photography and many more.

USW also hosted live music from students, partner colleges and graduates, including AWDL, MELLT, Rhosyn Jones and Melys Edwards, and held an alumni reception for more than 50 members of its graduate community.

The USW stand showcased work by Documentary Photography students from their Station to Station project – a collaboration with Transport for Wales – which provides a glimpse into everyday life in the South Wales valleys. Also on display was Finding Home, an exhibition on USW’s work as a University of Sanctuary, telling the stories of USW students who have fled war or persecution and are now rebuilding their lives as refugees in Wales.

Elsewhere on the Maes, USW held Visual Effects workshops in the Sinemaes, using a portable green screen for visitors to see themselves in stunning locations and backdrops.

The University were also co-sponsors of the Science and Technology Village – a firm fixture in the festival – alongside Cardiff Capital Region. As well as advising visitors on careers in STEM and opportunities in cyber and digital skills, USW hosted a lecture on the Future of AI in Education, and ran some very popular Rocketry 101 workshops, where visitors were able to build their very own rocket.

Visitors were able to find out more about becoming a USW student by chatting to staff about courses and virtually visiting its campuses via VR headsets. They also enjoyed tours of its facilities such as the Sport Park, Aircraft Hanger and Flight Simulator, Crime Scene Investigation house and Healthcare Simulation Centre.
