Two Learning Disability nursing students at the University of South Wales (USW), jointly won the Nursing Student Award at last night’s Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Wales awards.

Aimee Robinson and Claire Welch were jointly nominated by their Course Leader, Dr Stacey Rees, for their outreach work in raising the profile of learning disability nursing. In collaboration with Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), they attended schools and colleges and presented on their field of healthcare. The project has been credited with a marked rise in applications at universities across South Wales.

Emily Hoskins, another USW student nurse, was nominated in the same category. Specialising in Child Nursing, Emily was nominated for her quick-thinking and exceptional care at a ‘hit and run’ incident, where a young boy had been seriously injured. The paramedic at the scene described her care as ‘exemplary’.

Iwan Dowie, Deputy Dean for Health and Social Care at USW said: “Huge congratulations to Aimee and Claire for winning the Nursing Student Award. We are incredibly proud of all three of our nurses in being nominated at this national event. I feel confident in saying that they all have promising careers in nursing ahead of them.”

Held in Cardiff on Thursday 21 November, the 11th annual awards ceremony recognises nominated nurses, midwives, nursing students, and health care support workers who must demonstrate a passion for their profession and exemplify distinction in care, leadership, service, and innovation. Individuals can be nominated for an award by peers, teams, managers, patients and the public.
