New Deans appointed to lead key faculties at USW

The University of South Wales (USW) is proud to welcome two distinguished leaders who will head its key faculties and help shape the university’s strategic direction. Dr Rob Orford and Professor Jill Stewart bring a wealth of experience in science, education, and innovation, reinforcing USW’s commitment to real-world impact and academic excellence.

Dr Rob Orford has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education. With a distinguished career spanning health, science, and public policy, Dr Orford brings extensive leadership experience from roles including Chief Scientific Adviser for Health in the Welsh Government, CEO of the Moondance Cancer Initiative, and Lead Tackling Cancer Advisor at the Life Sciences Hub. He played a central role in Wales’ pandemic response and was awarded an OBE in 2024 for services to health sciences and policy. Dr Orford will join USW in early August.

Dr Rob Orford said: “I’m honoured to be joining the University of South Wales as Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education. Throughout my career, I’ve worked at the intersection of science, policy, and public service, and I’m excited to bring that experience to a university that shares my commitment to social impact and innovation. Life sciences and education are critical to addressing the challenges facing our communities, and I look forward to working with colleagues, students, and partners to drive meaningful change and shape the future of the sector.”

Professor Jill Stewart will take up the role of Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science in September. She joins USW from the University of Cumbria, where she was Founding Director of the Institute of Engineering, Computing and Advanced Manufacturing. Professor Stewart brings a strong track record in academic leadership, research, and employer engagement, with expertise in systems modelling, engineering applications of AI applications, and digital innovation.

Professor Jill Stewart said: “I’m thrilled to be joining USW at such an exciting time. The Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science is at the forefront of technological innovation, and I look forward to working with colleagues and students to push boundaries, foster creativity, and build strong partnerships that benefit both industry and society. With the university’s significant investment in a new state-of-the-art STEM facility opening in 2026, we have a unique opportunity to create a world-class environment for research, teaching, and collaboration.”

Welcoming the appointments, Professor James Gravelle, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “Rob and Jill bring exceptional experience and vision to their roles, and we’re proud to welcome them to USW.
