The University of South Wales (USW) has received a glowing report from CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), following a rigorous Quality Assurance Audit.

USW received the top outcome rating, which means that USW has evidenced best practice within most of their operations, processes, and procedures. They are seen to be offering the highest quality provision to their CIMPSPA learners.

USW embeds CIMSPA-recognised qualifications directly into the curriculum. As part of their degrees in Sport and Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise Therapy, and Strength and Conditioning, students are required to meet the CIMPSA standards to gain the Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications.

CIMSPA praised USW’s outstanding curriculum, teaching, and support systems that ensure students are not only academically prepared but industry-ready upon graduation. The audit report highlighted USW’s ability to integrate professional qualifications within degree programmes, helping students secure valuable certifications during their studies.

Jayden Wells, who is studying Sport and Exercise Science, described his first year as “brilliant.” Having moved from his former school where he had studied since Year 7, he was surprised at how quickly USW felt like home.

“Within the first month, I knew it was the same feeling as my old school. It felt like home,” Jayden said.

The CIMPSPA qualifications have already opened doors for Jayden. He recently secured a job as a Fitness Coach at the brand-new PureGym in Aberdare.

Jayden’s role includes delivering fitness inductions, group exercise classes, and providing personal training services. He recently completed first aid training, group exercise certification, and sales and operations workshops.

Though only in his first year, Jayden is already building a strong foundation for a future career in the fitness industry. He said: “I love running classes and designing bespoke fitness and nutrition programmes for clients.”

USW’s achievement of the CIMSPA Enhancing standard demonstrates how its sport and exercise programmes are preparing students like Jayden for real-world success from day one.

“We’re incredibly proud of the recognition from CIMSPA,” said Dr Tom Owens, Lecturer in Biomedical Science. “Our students are receiving an outstanding education and entering the industry as qualified, confident professionals.”
