Nurturing emerging music talent with strategic partnership

USW and Sound Progression have signed a strategic partnership

The University of South Wales (USW) and Sound Progression – a youth music development organisation – have launched a strategic partnership focused on nurturing emerging music talent, creating meaningful opportunities for young creatives, and strengthening the music industry in Wales.

Based in Cardiff, Sound Progression is a leading organisation supporting children and young people aged 10 to 25, especially those from diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through participant-led music projects and training delivered in community studios, Sound Progression promotes creative expression, empowerment, and confidence building for aspiring singers, songwriters, producers, and sound engineers.

The Ed Sheeran Foundation awarded a significant multi-year grant to Sound Progression in January 2025, providing financial stability and enabling growth for the youth music charity. Their partnership with USW forms a key part of this ongoing growth strategy.

Recognising Sound Progression’s vital role in the grassroots music ecosystem, USW is committed to embedding community-driven practice into its broader mission to foster inclusion, creativity, and career development.

This partnership is structured around three key pillars:

Participation - USW will provide collaborative platforms such as the Immersed Festival, enabling Sound Progression’s emerging artists to showcase their talents to diverse audiences. In return, Sound Progression will offer work experience and placement opportunities within its studios, giving USW Music students invaluable real-world insight and professional development. Joint marketing initiatives further support artist growth while providing students with practical, industry-relevant skills.

Inclusion – Both partners commit to widening access to creative pathways by collaborating with local civic initiatives including festivals and live music showcases. They aim to centre underrepresented voices in the music sector and promote equity through joint activities and community engagement.

Development – Professional learning opportunities including guest lectures, workshops, and industry forums will be co-developed to support students, staff, and the wider music community. USW will also support Sound Progression’s organisational growth by offering access to rehearsal spaces and tailored development programmes.

A jointly governed Partnership Steering Group will oversee the delivery, impact measurement, and future growth of the collaboration.

Carole Blade, Company Manager at Sound Progression, said: “This partnership is a vital step towards creating sustainable pathways for young artists in Wales. Working closely with USW allows us to enhance opportunities for our participants and strengthen the local music sector.”

Lucy Squire, Head of Music and Drama at USW, added: “Our collaboration with Sound Progression embodies our commitment to connect education, creativity, and community. Together, we are fostering an inclusive environment where emerging talent can thrive and contribute to Wales’ cultural and economic future.”

This strategic partnership represents a shared vision to develop a vibrant, equitable music ecosystem in Wales, empowering the next generation of artists while building lasting community and industry impact.

The partnership will be launched with a free live music showcase at the USW Students’ Union, Cardiff campus, on Thursday 9 October from 5pm. The event is open to both students and the wider music community.
