University of South Wales joins global Technician Commitment community

The University of South Wales (USW) has formally pledged to address workforce challenges facing technical colleagues who are critical to research and teaching activities.

By signing the internationally-recognised Technician Commitment, USW joins a community of organisations improving visibility, recognition, career development, and long-term sustainability of technical professionals in higher education, research, and innovation.

Technicians at USW are integral to the delivery of outstanding teaching, research, and innovation across the University.

Their expertise spans a diverse range of specialist facilities, from podcast studios, green screen and virtual production spaces, drama studios, and photography laboratories, to  state-of-the-art engineering facilities in the newly-built Calon building, aviation hangars, specialist science and forensic laboratories, and the University's Sports Park.

Professor Martin Steggall, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor at USW, said: “Working in partnership with academic colleagues and students, USW's technicians enable practical industry-relevant learning, support world-class research, maintain complex technical infrastructure, and help prepare graduates with the skills and experience needed for their future careers.

“Through the Technician Commitment, USW will build on this strong foundation by enhancing the visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability of its technical workforce, ensuring they continue to play a central role in achieving the University's strategic ambitions.”

The Technician Commitment is a pledge to implement a long-term action plan to enhance technical careers, opportunities and skills within the organisation.

“It’s thrilling to see another Welsh university join the Technician Commitment’s ever-growing ranks. 

“We look forward to supporting the University’s journey in enhancing the visibility and career development of their technical workforce and sharing valuable insights across our growing community.” 

Since launching in 2017, it has now grown to a global community of more than 140 organisations championing technicians and their contributions to higher education and research. The initiative is hosted by the UK Institute of Technical Skills & Strategy.
