This week’s graduation ceremonies at the University of South Wales (USW) will mark a particularly proud moment for Ali Mirzo, who has completed his Masters degree in Leadership and Management (Education), joining four of his children who have also graduated from USW.

Originally from Syria and now a UK citizen living in Cardiff, Ali’s academic journey is the latest chapter in a family story that spans multiple careers, all rooted at USW. While Ali graduates this week, his four adult children have each completed their degrees at USW over recent years, building what he describes as a shared and deeply meaningful experience.

Ali brings decades of international teaching experience to his studies. After leaving Syria in 1990, he spent 24 years in Abu Dhabi working as an Arabic teacher for non-native speakers, including roles in British and American international schools. After moving to the UK nearly ten years ago, he recently retrained as a driving instructor, a role he has balanced alongside full-time postgraduate study.

“It was a very challenging year for me,” Ali said. “I work full-time as a driving instructor, and studying at the same time was hard, but I made it. Graduating feels like the end of a successful journey.”

Ali chose the MA Leadership and Management (Education) course to update his professional knowledge and prepare for a possible return to teaching in the Middle East.

His children’s achievements at USW are equally impressive. His two sons both graduated in aircraft engineering and are now working for British Airways at Cardiff Airport. His eldest daughter completed a degree in interior design, while his other daughter is also graduating this week as a qualified Child Nurse. She is working at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Ali also has a nine-year old daughter.

Reflecting on why the family chose USW, Ali credits the the University’s supportive environment. “My sons started here first and spoke very highly of the University,” he said. “When I joined myself, I found the experience excellent, very good lecturers, a strong system, and everything is well organised.”

Ali also praised the academic support he received during his studies, particularly his dissertation supervisor, Dr Emily John. “She was very helpful and did a great job supporting me throughout,” he said.

“It makes me very proud to follow my children across the stage this week. The University of South Wales has been a big part of our family’s journey.”
