Sustainable Catering
USW Sustainable Food Safety Policy
The provision of food and beverage has a complex relationship with health and the environment and the Catering services at the University of South Wales has a significant opportunity to create long term benefits for their students and staff.
The Catering department also recognises the need to encourage and provide a way to a positive lifestyle change for both students and staff. This will lead to a positive impact on health and well-being as well as on the environment.

External Partnerships
Through our partnerships with third party operators such as Too Good to Go and Peas Please we are able to maximise our opportunities to mitigate waste and promote a healthier, sustainable lifestyle for all.
Circular economy
At the start of the 2021/2022 academic year, USW became the first University in Wales to launch a circular economy reusable hot beverage cup scheme. This major initiative was launched to help our customers avoid having to use a disposable cup at our food outlets.
Part of the funding to launch this scheme was linked to a successful bid for circular economy funding from the Welsh government. The Circular Economy Funds main purpose is to enable capital investment in keeping resources in use for as long as possible, instead of being incinerated or going to landfill, and to drive demand for secondary materials. To further promote and increase usage of the scheme, we reduced the initial cup deposit, which is instantly refunded to the consumer, once the cup is returned to the catering department at end of use, from £10 to £5 for the start of the 22/23 academic year.
