Study during Ramadan

Staff and Students are strongly advised to raise any concerns with the University (normally the Chaplaincy or your course leader) at the earliest possible time, so that the University can explore with the possibility of reasonable adjustments.

University Support for Muslim students studying during Ramadan
The Chaplaincy is here to help and advise you. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

The beginning of Ramadan will coincide with term time for 2024.
Whilst the University recognises the importance of religious fasting, in accordance with the University’s Extenuating Circumstances Regulations fasting would not be considered a reason for claiming extenuating circumstances. However, the University has considered carefully what adjustments it may be able to be made to support students who are fasting.

The University offers the following advice to student to help them achieve at their best studying during Ramadan. It is important that students observing Ramadan consider the impact it may have upon their study. Students are advised to consider, if they are fasting, how best to look after themselves.

The following points may be useful for this:

  • Think ahead and plan schedules ensuring that you have an effective prayer/work balance. Prepare the night before by mentally rehearsing the day ahead and note areas which may present difficulties. Work out how to overcome those difficulties each day.
  • Ensure you eat at ‘suhur/sehri’ and eat slow-release energy foods. Concentrating upon foods rich in complex carbohydrates and protein, fruit and vegetables, and plenty of water.
  • Ensure you have food available for Iftar. Eat a healthy, balanced meal with plenty of water. Currently The Meeting House is open providing hot meals at this time all through Ramadan.
  • Keep out of the sun and limit physical activity to what is essential.
  • Ensure you are well rested - this may mean having an early night by sleeping after Isha prayer.
  • If you feel lethargic or irritated, refresh your 'wudu' (ritual ablution).
