One experience stands out - being called to assist in a murder investigation.

From classroom to crime scenes – my journey at USW

Hi, I’m Maria Rosca, a BSc Forensic Investigation student at the University of South Wales. My journey into forensic science has been anything but traditional - Forensic Investigation is my second degree, I first graduated with a BSc in Mathematics with Finance in 2019. From that experience, I quickly realised how essential real-world experience is in this field, so from the start, I made it my goal to secure a placement year.

I had incredible support from the USW careers team and my course leader during this process. From day one, the career’s team was by my side, constantly supporting me in finding and applying for opportunities relevant to my course. They updated me on new roles every month and was always available for a quick catch-up or to answer any questions. My course leader was an absolute rock for me, she was there every step of the way, especially when I was writing my application, I can’t thank them all enough.
With their guidance and help I landed a placement with South Wales Police in their Digital Forensics Unit - it was everything I’d hoped for and more. I worked on live investigations, extracted data from devices, and even assisted on search warrants.

WHEN I BEGAN MY SECOND YEAR AT USW, I WAS ON A MISSION – I KNEW I HAD TO GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE, WHETHER THROUGH A PLACEMENT OR ANY RELEVANT OPPORTUNITY, TO BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR MY CAREER.

The moment that changed everything

One night, I volunteered to a request for help with a murder investigation. My role was to extract data from a recovered mobile phone. It was intense, surreal—and completely unforgettable.

“Even now, I still feel excited thinking about that moment – not about the crime itself, of course, but about the incredible opportunity to contribute to such a case. It was a real test of my skills and reinforced how crucial digital forensics is in major investigations.”

Even though I didn’t have a background in digital forensics, I was determined to learn fast. The team welcomed me, and with their support, I gained confidence and practical skills. That placement turned into a full-time job offer, and I’ve now got a role lined up as a Mobile Device Examiner with South Wales Police.

Over the course of my placement, I learned how to handle digital evidence, repair devices, communicate with officers, and manage high-pressure situations. It taught me so much—not just technically, but professionally and personally.

Why taking a sandwich year was the best decision I made

Looking back, choosing to do a sandwich year was a turning point for me. It gave me clarity, real-world skills, and opened the door to a career I love.

To any student thinking about a placement, my advice is simple:

“Just do it! It’s a massive advantage, getting any experience that might differentiate you from others is imperative.”
