MICHALINA ZUKOWSKA

How a sandwich year opened doors to big fashion brands.

Sandwich Years

My placement has transformed my career prospects. Big brands and London designers are now interested in me.

Why I decided to do a sandwich year

Hi, I’m Michalina Zukowska, a BA Fashion Design student at the University of South Wales. I didn't initially plan on it, but after speaking with final-year students, I noticed a significant difference in the quality of work and maturity of those who had completed a placement. They were more professional and had a clearer vision for their careers. Their growth inspired me to seek out that same experience for myself.

My placement

My placement is with the brand A Kind of Guise in Munich, Germany. As a student without prior industry experience, finding a placement in fashion was competitive.

I wanted to travel and work in the industry, and while this was my primary option at the time, I am very happy I took it. The tutors provided excellent support, feedback, and resources to help find a placement.

The best thing I’ve learned during my placement

The importance of teamwork and adaptability in a real-world environment. I also gained invaluable experience working with a vast range of materials that I wouldn't have had access to at university.

Job prospects

I am still on my placement, but it has already transformed my prospects. Before this, big brands wouldn't look at my CV. Now, as I look for a second short internship before returning to uni, I actually have choices.

I have designers in London interested in me and I even reached the final stage of the recruitment process with On, competing against only three others. Even with brands like Hugo Boss, the progress in my career reach has been huge.

Would I recommend a sandwich year?

Definitely. There are things you simply cannot learn in a classroom. It is the best way to understand if you are on the right career path and it makes finding future work much easier once you have a professional brand on your CV.
