Finding Purpose and Confidence Through Business

Business and Management

I’ve taken part in a virtual internship that covered different industries and business scenarios.

A Second Chance at University

After leaving school, I tried university elsewhere but barely went to any lectures and knew I’d wasted the opportunity. Working full time in a law firm afterwards made me miserable, and that’s when I realised I needed to go back and do something that actually meant something to me. I came to USW through Clearing in a very last-minute decision, but I promised myself it would be different this time. Studying Business and Management has given me the chance to reset, commit properly and start building a future I can be proud of.

Business at USW has been much more than just lectures. I’ve taken part in a virtual internship that covered different industries and business scenarios, working on simulations that really made you think about decision-making and consequences. One exercise on supply and demand saw my group accidentally overfish and “kill the ocean”, which was a light-hearted way of showing how easy it is to make the wrong call in business. It all helped me realise that I enjoy learning through doing, and that I thrive when I’m pushed to think practically rather than just on paper.

MY DISSERTATION HAS BEEN THE FIRST PIECE OF WORK I’VE BEEN GENUINELY OBSESSED WITH IN THE BEST WAY.

Building a Future in Education and Research

My favourite part of the course has definitely been my dissertation. It’s the first project I’ve felt truly passionate about, to the point where I find myself thinking about it constantly and pushing the work far beyond the basic requirements. Having the chance to take an idea I care about, explore it in depth and potentially look at getting it published has shown me what I’m actually capable of when I’m fully engaged. Through the course, I’ve also developed communication, presentation and writing skills, and I’ve learned how to adapt the way I write compared with how I speak.

Looking ahead, I’d love to go into postgraduate study, complete a master’s and ultimately become a lecturer so I can keep researching and teaching. My advice for anyone considering business at USW is simple: treat it as a genuine opportunity, build relationships with your lecturers and throw yourself into the work, because if you commit to it, you really can turn things around.
