Attending industry lectures has allowed me to form invaluable professional connections.

Discovering my path

My interest in cyber security began early; as a child, I was the go-to person in my family for fixing computer issues! My curiosity deepened as I explored hacking topics on forums such as 4chan and Hackforums, learning about techniques like DDoS attacks and remote access tools (RATs). Before pursuing cybersecurity, I spent 10 years working in health and social care for young adults with autism and learning difficulties, and later caring for my twin brother, who was paralysed after a motorbike accident. Once my brother had a stable support team in place, I knew it was the right time to follow my passion.

USW’s Applied Cyber Security course immediately stood out because of its practical, hands-on approach. The foundation year allowed me to transition smoothly into my degree, providing me with the confidence to pursue cybersecurity professionally. Networking has been key to the experience I’ve had so far, and attending industry lectures has allowed me to form invaluable professional connections.

Building skills and future ambitions

Throughout my studies, I’ve gained essential skills in securing systems, including the OSI model, and digital forensics. Looking forward, my goal is to begin as a SOC analyst on a blue team, then advance to red team penetration testing. Ultimately, I aim to become an Ethical Hacker, combining both offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills.

My advice for future students is straightforward: take your time, focus on what genuinely interests you, and avoid comparing your progress to others. Cyber security is an evolving field, and embracing continuous learning is essential to succeeding.
