Studying in a supportive environment at USW

I’m Leah, a third-year student in the BA (Hons) Sports Journalism course at USW. My journey into sports journalism started in 2010 during the World Cup, which sparked my love for football. That experience shaped my career aspirations, and after some years working, I realised I wanted a degree that would let me talk about and share my passion for sports.

Choosing USW was easy - Cardiff is close to home in Pembrokeshire, and USW’s course offered the exact focus I was looking for. The support system here has been excellent, especially as someone returning to university. The University’s counselling services and supportive faculty have helped me transition smoothly, with invaluable guidance from lecturers like Julie, who understands the unique challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field.

From internships to career goals

Throughout my time at USW, I’ve had fantastic industry experiences. In my second year, I interned with Redmen TV, a fan media channel for Liverpool Football Club. I managed their social media and even appeared on their YouTube channel, which was a significant milestone. I’ve also enjoyed collaborative projects like the “Join Our Journey” podcast and the student takeover on Radio Glamorgan, where I work with classmates to produce content, strengthening our teamwork and practical skills.

Looking forward, I hope to work in sports media, possibly with Liverpool FC. This course has not only equipped me with versatile skills in journalism, social media, and broadcasting but also bolstered my confidence to navigate the industry. My advice for anyone considering sports journalism at USW? Dive in—you’ll gain skills that go far beyond sports coverage and prepare you for a variety of careers.
