One of the things I’ve loved most about the course is how varied and practical it is. I expected it to feel more academic, but instead I’ve had the freedom to explore my craft, experiment and learn by doing.
Discovering the right creative path
I’ve always had an interest in animation, but my school and local colleges never offered anything like it. After years of working in jobs I didn’t enjoy, I knew I needed to retrain and finally do something I was genuinely passionate about. I found USW by googling animation courses in Wales, and with Cardiff being such a creative hub, it felt like the perfect fit. I went to several open days and subject talks, and each one made it clearer that this was the right environment for me.
Since joining the course, I’ve had some brilliant industry-facing opportunities. We were invited to take part in the Cardiff Animation Festival, we’ve created idents for Japan Fusion Wales, and most recently a group of us represented Team Stop Motion at Swansea Comic Con. Those real-world experiences have helped me understand the industry better and given me the confidence to see myself working in it.

One of the things I’ve loved most about the course is how varied and practical it is. I expected it to feel more academic, but instead I’ve had the freedom to explore my craft, experiment and learn by doing. We regularly collaborate with students from other courses too – from actors providing voiceovers to music students creating soundtracks – and in second year we even helped final-year students with background and lighting work. Cardiff itself has been a great place to study; it’s full of homegrown art, studios and creative spaces, which makes it inspiring just to be here.
The facilities have been a huge part of my experience. Before this course, I’d never had access to professional cameras, lighting, tripods or specialist software, and now they’re part of my everyday work. Knowing that I can continue using many of these facilities as an alumna is a real advantage. Looking ahead, I’d love to join a studio like Aardman or work anywhere that lets me stay hands-on with the craft.
