An inspiring journey from recovery to ambition
After retiring from sport and spending time in hospital, I met occupational therapists during my recovery. They really inspired me and gave me the passion towards wanting to become an occupational therapist as well. Just by luck, USW was about to start offering the access course themselves.
I came to an Open Day a year before I started and met the course lead and some of the students, and I was in awe of the facilities. I’m a wheelchair user, so the hills were a bit of a challenge, but even with that, I just felt like this is where I want to be. I didn’t apply anywhere else.

I’ve had two placements so far – one in perinatal mental health and the other in elective surgery. We’ve also had loads of guest speakers, like occupational therapists working in prisons. We get practical training all the time, like manual handling, breakaway training, basic life support, and wheelchair measurement training. I’ve loved getting involved with all of it.
The course has really built my confidence. I’m class rep and I’ve learned so much about myself through this experience. One moment that really stuck with me was when I was on placement and a mum let me hold her baby – she said she wouldn’t let anyone else, and the baby just fell asleep in my arms. That meant so much to me. I’d tell anyone thinking about this course to speak with the staff, go to an Open Day, and just get the feel of the place. It really powers you to want to be here.
