Student's Welsh Language Rights

Since 1 April 2018 students in Wales have the legal right to use Welsh. When you first enrol as a student at the University you will be asked for your preferred language - Welsh or English. This information is noted on your student record so that staff are aware when they communicate with you.

All students are entitled to receive or conduct the following in Welsh:

  • Correspondence including letters, e-mails or text messages
  • Counselling service
  • Applying for financial support
  • Signage and self-service machines
  • Welcome booklet
  • Meetings
  • Telephone calls to a main number, helpline, call centre or automated telephone system.
  • Reception service
  • Prospectus
  • Certificates
  • Public events e.g lectures, graduation or award ceremonies
  • Making a complaint
  • Forms, documents and notices
  • Submitting any written work in Welsh as part of an assessment or examination (this will depend on the examining body)
  • Websites, student intranet, virtual learning sites, learning portal sites, apps and social media
  • A personal tutor (*Note: this does not mean allocating an academic tutor)

Student Accommodation: During the application process all students can state whether they would like to live with other Welsh speaking students.
