Alternative Offers

If we are unable to offer you a place on your original course choice then we may need to consider you for an alternative course. Our alternative offers, often referred to as changed course offers, are usually in a related subject.

We make a changed course offer when your qualifications and/or grades do not quite meet the entry criteria for your first choice but do meet the criteria for an alternative course instead.

Alternative offers may include a different, related University of South Wales course, a place on a Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) or a foundation year course.

If you miss out on the grades for one of our degree courses, our Cert HE, or 'supported first year' courses are the next best thing. You will study the same modules and attend the same classes as a student on year one of the standard degree course, but you will also attend an additional class that will help to improve your study skills and get you back on track.

If you pass the supported first year, you will be able to join your fellow students on the second year of the standard degree course and progress as normal.  You are therefore still able to complete a degree with us in three years.

As the Cert HE is a one-year stand-alone qualification, you will need to submit a direct application to confirm that you wish to proceed from the Cert HE to year two of your degree.  As long as you pass your Cert HE this is only a formality to create your new student record and, applying directly, does not include any application fee.

Our Cert HEs are very popular, there will be other people in the same situation as you, and the course fees are exactly the same as the degree.

We offer four-year degree programmes with an integrated foundation year in a number of subject areas for applicants who do not meet the entry criteria to go directly onto year one of a degree course at the University of South Wales.

If your course has changed, and you have already applied for student finance funding, you will need to update your online funding application as soon as possible with the new course information. You can do this by logging into your online application, at the relevant website below, and completing a 'Change of Circumstances' process with the new course information. You will need your Customer Reference Number (CRN) and password in order to log in.

If you cannot remember your password or CRN, you can reset your login details by following the instructions online:

If you are considering a Cert HE course, there is some important information you need to know about funding.  Even though you will be able to progress onto the remaining years of a full degree course upon passing the supported first year, when you apply for student funding the Cert HE is classed as a one-year course, with a start date of September 2019 and an end date of June 2020.  This means that you will only be able to apply for funding for, what is termed, a 'final year' course during this year.

Please note that the financial support available for a final year course is slightly lower than a full year course, and your new entitlement will be detailed in the outcome of your re-assessment for funding.

As with all other awards, as you progress from one year to the next, you will need to reapply for funding each year. If you have any questions about funding, please contact the Student Money Advice Team on 01443 483778.

If you have received a changed course offer, which you have accepted, and have already applied for a place in our halls of residence, then your application will remain unaffected.
