In Year Retrieval
‘In-year retrieval’ (IYR) is a process that, in some circumstances, allows a student to turn a failing mark into a pass by submitting an updated version of an assessment within 10 days of receiving the initial mark.
- Not all assessments are eligible for IYR - check with your module leader.
- You may use IYR a maximum of two times in each level of your course.
- IYR differs from the standard resit approach where you submit a new piece of work in the resit period, typically in the summer
How to claim IYR
For eligible assessments, IYR will be available when you have made a genuine and appropriate submission for which you received a mark that falls below the pass mark for that assessment. IYR is not available for non-submissions, ie, it is not available if you did not submit the assessment at all the first time.
Follow these steps:
- Check with your module leader that the assessment is eligible for IYR.
- Notify your module leader that you wish to make an IYR attempt.
- Read through the feedback on your initial assessment submission carefully and identify where your work needs to be improved. Discuss this with your module leader if necessary.
- Make the necessary adjustments to your work. Your IYR submission should have Track Changes enabled, so that the person marking the work can clearly see what changes/improvements have been made in response to feedback. Please see Track changes in Word. If it is not possible to track changes due to the format of the submission, you must include a summary of changes made.
- Your module leader will advise you how/where to submit this new version of your work.
- IYR submissions must be made within 10 working days of receiving the mark and feedback for the original submission.
Notes
- You can only use IYR once on any given assessment.
- You can use IYR at most twice per course level.
- Your mark following an IYR attempt will be capped at the pass mark for that assessment.
- Any work submitted after the 10 working day deadline will not be accepted.
- The 5-day grace period (see sections 76-78 of the Regulations for Taught Courses) does not apply to IYR re-submissions.
- Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) do not apply to IYR as this is the same assessment.
- If you had ECs for the initial submission of the assessment, then you cannot extend the ECs to include the IYR.

FAQs
- It is your choice whether you take an IYR opportunity, and you may instead choose to submit a new assignment in the resit period.
- Think about the whole year of assessments. Do you have sufficient time in your schedule to rework the failed piece of work, alongside doing work for other upcoming deadlines. Consider the weighting of the failed assessment, how important is it?
- You can only take IYR once on the same assessment in a module, but you can take both IYRs for a given course level in the same module on different assessments.
- If you do decide to use IYR, remember to carefully read the feedback you received for the original submission as this will give you guidance on areas where you need to improve the work. If you need clarification on any points raised in the feedback, be sure to speak to your tutor.
- If you don't do IYR, then you might be offered an opportunity to re-submit during the August re-submit/re-sit period instead. This may be several months after you completed the original piece of work and therefore the content may not be fresh in your mind, making things more difficult. In addition, this period is at a time when you could otherwise be on vacation from university.
IYR applies to coursework assessments although not all assessments are eligible either because of the type of assessment or timing of the assessment so, please check with your module tutor if the assessment is covered by IYR.
Exemptions include dissertations, simulations, and final year projects. IYR does not apply to examinations or in class tests.
If you fail the IYR and receive a mark that falls below the pass mark for that assessment, you may be offered a resit opportunity during the re-sit period but it will depend on your overall student profile at the end of the academic year and the recommendations of the Progression and Award Assessment Board.
