What to Expect at Your Open Day

Here’s our guide to what you can expect your USW Open Day to look like from registration to welcome talks and campus tours.

Registration

Registration is where your Open Day begins, so it’s important to arrive on time to give yourself a chance to get settled before the welcome talks start.

When you arrive, just head to the registration desk. We’ll scan your QR code (you’ll find this in your confirmation email) and give you a campus map and timetable to help guide your day.

Most Open Days start around 9.30am but check your confirmation email for your exact time so you don’t miss anything.

Welcome talk

After you have registered and had some time to settle in, you’ll head over to a Welcome Talk. You’ll hear from our staff about the university, student life and the opportunities waiting for you here.

You’ll also get some advice on how to make the most of your Open Day, so you’ll leave feeling ready to explore everything the University of South Wales has to offer.

Subject Talk

One of the most important and exciting parts of the day is exploring your subject area.

Subject talks or taster sessions give you the chance to meet the lecturers that may be teaching you, hear more about what you’ll learn on the course and even see some of the facilities and spaces you’ll be learning in. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about modules, careers or placements, too.

Student Life and Support Talks

Once you are finished with your subject talk – your time is your own. We run sessions on various topics throughout the day including:

  • Funding your Studies
  • Accommodation at USW
  • Acing your application
  • Welsh for All

You will find details of exact timings in your programme. These sessions are a great opportunity to ask questions and build confidence about your next steps.

Accommodation Tours

Tours of our accommodation are scheduled across the afternoon and are often led by our student ambassadors, many of whom have lived in halls themselves, so it’s a great chance to ask about costs, applications, and what day-to-day life is like.

Campus Tours

Open Days are a great chance to explore the campus where you’ll be studying. Each subject session includes a tour of the facilities you’ll be using, and our libraries are open throughout the day for you to drop in and have a look around.

If you’re visiting Treforest, you’ll also have the option to join one of our student-led campus tours that run throughout the afternoon.

Open Day Information Fair

Running throughout the day, the Information Fair is a one-stop shop for advice. Staff from key services will be on hand to chat about:

  • Admissions and applications
  • Student finance and funding
  • Wellbeing and disability support
  • Accommodation

You’ll also have the chance to pick up brochures, guides, and extra resources to take home.

Students’ Union

No Open Day would be complete without discovering the Students’ Union. They have so much to offer, and will be on hand to chat about clubs, societies, social events and more.

Exploring the Local Area

Once you’ve seen everything on campus, why not take some time to explore the local area? After all, this could be your new home! Check out local transport links, supermarkets, and even cafés or gyms - you’ll soon get a feel for the community you could be joining.

Our location pages have some ideas on how you could spend your time, so make sure to check them out for inspiration.
