Thanks to what I learned at USW, I was shortlisted for the DMA Breakthrough Awards with Barclays and DMA.
Choosing a broad degree with real focus
After my A-levels, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I was interested in how businesses work and how technology fits into that. Business Management felt like the right choice because it’s broad, giving me the chance to explore different areas like marketing, human resources and supply chain. When I researched USW, I was drawn to the way the modules were designed and the growing focus on technology and AI within business.
During my time at USW, I’ve taken every opportunity I could to connect with industry and build experience. I completed a placement with a charity based in Newport, putting learning into practice while still being part of the university environment. I was shortlisted for the DMA Breakthrough Awards with Barclays and DMA, which allowed me to take part in a three-day academy in London working on a live Costa brief, and had the opportunity to collaborate with students from Canada and Spain on a group project while studying business ethics, putting together a report on a real-world business that is now published online. This was a completely new experience for me, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Support at USW has gone far beyond the classroom. I’ve used careers fairs, the Advice Zone and well-being events to look after both my development and my mental health, especially during dissertation season. Activities like tote-bag painting or CAD workshops with the engineering school gave me creative breaks that helped me reset while still learning new skills. Exploring different campuses in Treforest, Cardiff and Newport made me feel part of a wider community rather than tied to one building, and I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a gap year and still find your people when you return.
Right now, I’m exploring roles that bring together business and technology, particularly AI-related areas, while continuing to build skills through internships and volunteering. My advice for anyone considering Business and Management at USW is to use the degree as a starting point, try different areas in first year, talk to lecturers and support teams early, and remember you don’t have to have everything decided on day one.
