Our Business and Management course is structured in two 10-week blocks each year, with active learning at the beginning of each module. As well as gaining a degree, you’ll have the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership, bringing you closer to Chartered Manager status at no extra cost.

The first year of study will focus on business management and you’ll explore the different functions of business and how they interrelate.
People, Work and Society
You’ll explore the experience of people in the workplace and the impact this has on wider society. The module looks at historical and modern approaches to management in the workplace.
Economics, Law and the Business Environment
Learn about the internal and external environment and how it impacts the current decision-making and future direction of business.
Becoming a Professional: Critical Enquiry
This will be the first of your skills-based modules, which introduces critical thinking and crucial research skills, providing the foundation for the next 3 years of study.

Principles of Supply Chain Management
Understand the importance of recognising and managing the holistic supply chain as a key part of a company’s ability to deliver value to its customers and stakeholders.
Marketing and Consumer Behaviour
Learn how to understand and market to your customers as fundamental skills in the diverse and fast-paced marketing industry.

Becoming a Professional: Enterprise Project
Evaluate key entrepreneurial traits and skills, reflect on your own abilities, and identify areas for development. The module brings together theories from marketing, HR, and management.
In your second year of studying, you’ll develop the key skills which the CMI outlines are crucial for managers in the workplace. You’ll also be able to do a 10-week internship or engage in a live business case study.
Project Management
You’ll explore and examine project management skills in a business context, applying key project management techniques and principles and looking at the impact that they have on business processes.
The Digital Workplace
As a future manager, you’ll learn to appreciate the capabilities of digital technologies and how organisations adopt and embed them.
Business Analytics for Decision-Making
This module looks at the analysis of financial and statistical data and information, and the importance of confident decision-making.
Managing People
This module will teach the skills to have tricky conversations, negotiate, recruit and manage performance – just some of the areas that help develop key employability skills.
Employment Experience 1 and 2
These two modules are delivered together and let you engage with a real business either through a 10-week internship or a live business case in the South Wales Business Clinic. There is also a taught option for students who prefer not to complete an internship.

In the final year, you’ll be able to choose from critical enquiry in a dissertation or a consultancy-based project. Both project options are double modules and will be worked on throughout the year, giving you a chance to research, explore and focus your study towards your future career.
International Business Management
This module provides a systematic and critical understanding of the global business environment. You’ll be looking at emerging themes in international business.
Business Ethics and Sustainability
Learn about the current ethical considerations for businesses which drive them to be more socially responsible and sustainable bodies.
Contemporary Global Leadership
Develop a solid understanding of the different complexities that come with managing or leading a diverse and international contemporary workforce.
Strategic Management
Explore class-based simulation exercises where you’ll be asked to choose and apply a range of tools, techniques, theories and frameworks to address changing, dynamic business environments.
Critical Enquiry or Consultancy Project
Students can choose between doing a dissertation in the Critical Enquiry Project or a consultancy project researching a live issue from our partner businesses.
Course Highlights
Delivery and assessment
Our business and management course is broken into two 10-week blocks to encourage creative thinking. You will work with real businesses and their live briefs as part of your modules. You’ll also be invited to join our active LinkedIn page as a business student.
If a traditional dissertation isn't for you, choose a consultancy project and work on a brief from one of our partner businesses instead. You'll be consulting with the management team and developing a report that will be used to help improve real-life situations. Students graduate with the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership, bringing you closer to Chartered Manager status at no extra cost.
Teaching staff
All our teaching staff on the business and management course are qualified academics with experience working in many sectors including retail, marketing, accounting and finance, logistics and supply chain, strategy, leadership and management. The team brings their industry experience and active research to class each week and has a weekly online session dedicated to students to help answer any questions they have. This is part of our open-door policy, and an opportunity for students to talk with their academics individually about what they've learned during the week and ask any questions they might have.
Placements and work experience
Our business and management course actively encourages internships so if you choose to take a sandwich year, we’ll support you with applications to help you get your foot in the door. Our team will keep an eye on you during your placement, speaking with your employer and visiting your place of work.
The course also offers all students 10 weeks in industry as part of their study. This is a great opportunity to become part of an organisation in your second year of study, with a range of fantastic employers in the region. It will create experience to bolster your CV, helping you maximise your employability once you graduate.
Facilities
As a business and management student, you’ll be studying at our Treforest campus in the heart of the South Wales Valleys. Treforest hosts our South Wales Business Clinic, Legal Advice Clinic, Moot Court Room and Financial Trading Room, which all provide an opportunity for you to put your skills into practice and experience an immersive learning environment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
UCAS points: 96 (or above)
Typical qualification requirements:
- A Level: CCC
- Welsh BACC: Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C in the Skills Challenge Certificate and CC at A Level
- BTEC: BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Merit Merit
- Access to HE: Pass the Access to HE Diploma and obtain a minimum of 96 UCAS tariff points.
Additional requirements include:
The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances

English language requirements
International applicants will need to have achieved an overall of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component/TOEFL 72 overall and a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing or equivalent.

As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.
