One standout moment was a Surgical First Assistant placement, where I got to assist surgeons directly.
Choosing theatre over the office
Before starting my degree, I worked in a hospital and discovered how much I enjoyed being around people and helping them. That experience made me realise I didn’t want a desk job - I wanted something fast-paced and rewarding. I chose Operating Department Practice because of its theatre focus and the opportunity to be right in the middle of the action. Compared to other healthcare roles, this one felt more immediate and exciting.
I was part of the first cohort of this course at USW, which was daunting at first. But after meeting Craig, one of the lecturers, at an open day, I knew I was in the right place. His enthusiasm was infectious, and I left feeling confident and inspired.

Placement is challenging, but it’s been the most rewarding part of my course. I’ve worked in emergency theatres and major centres like Cardiff, where I’ve witnessed some of the most intense and fascinating cases. One standout moment was a Surgical First Assistant placement, where I got to assist surgeons directly. That experience confirmed this is exactly what I want to do.
The facilities at USW, especially the simulation centre, have been a massive help. We train through spontaneous simulations that mimic real-life emergencies, which builds confidence and problem-solving skills under pressure. Thanks to all this, I feel fully prepared to step into the role after graduation. My advice? Don’t stress too much. Stay organised and trust yourself.
