LGBTQ+ History Month is not just a celebration; it is a call to action. It invites us to educate ourselves, honour our past, and work together towards a future where everyone is free to be their authentic selves. Embracing this month strengthens our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our university and beyond.

LGBTQ+ History Month is a vital opportunity for reflection, education, and celebration of the diverse experiences and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history.

For me, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage displayed by those who fought for the rights and recognition that many of us enjoy today. Understanding LGBTQ+ history is crucial in fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and understood.

By acknowledging the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community, we can better appreciate the progress made and recognise the work that still lies ahead. Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month also creates a platform for dialogue about the intersections of identity, culture, and history. It encourages students and faculty to engage with diverse perspectives and challenge biases. This engagement fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity within our university community, promoting acceptance and understanding.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I find personal significance in this month. As a dance movement therapist leading movement-for-wellbeing sessions and designing arts and health projects for the LGBTQ+ community, I particularly reflect on the role the arts can play in sustaining and transforming our histories and supporting us in feeling less isolated, stronger, more resilient and connected.

The arts, and in my case, dance/movement, provide evidence of our ability to come together and move together to build solidarity. It is a time to reflect on my journey and the journeys of others who have come before me. It reminds me that our identities and histories are woven together, creating a rich tapestry that enhances our collective narrative.
